Ebola update:

There are now 2 confirmed cases of Ebola here in Dallas, both are health-care workers that provided care to the original 'patient zero' (the guy we were all watching last week being ambulanced to the hospital tested negative).

These nurses were operating under CDC's guidelines, even though initial reports had officials throwing them under the bus and saying they 'breached protocol.'

Also, the patient in the newest case (diagnosed and testing positive overnight) FLEW ON A FRONTIER AIRLINES FLIGHT FROM CLEVELAND TO DALLAS ON MONDAY NIGHT!

So the CDC has this totally under control and has done a bang-up job so far...

More details:

CDC approved her air travel even after registering a low-grade fever. Ebola is considered contagious 'only after' symptoms start to show, high temperatures and subsequent fever are symptoms. Her fever was at 99.6 when she was to board the plane, but the CDC is trying to defend their decision saying that it didn't reach the 'standard fever threshold of 100.4.'

The next day she was at the hospital and undergoing blood tests that later confirmed she had Ebola.

I am so happy I don't keep up on this ebola crap, I'd just end up getting pissed or freaking out neither of which I feel like doing.

I wonder if this response would be better if we actually had a Surgeon General right now.

Call it 101 or fucking define the context of symptoms. Loop-holes are destroying our system of accountability.

Off-topic: anyone else sick and tired of hearing a bar-conversation continue with "so I told her, I said..." ..?

"So I told her [whatever I told her]" should suffice. Otherwise, it's like saying "so I walked there, I walked 'I walked right over there'." Can't describe why it's getting so annoying to me, but sheeeesh.

No, it's not, but Obama's nominee is being held up by the Senate because he once called guns a public health issue.

Yeah, I personally believe it is time we outlaw the NRA and other bad influences on our government especially related to money. This Ebola crisis at least in the states won't be as bad as it is in West Africa. It also didn't help that the sequester cut funding to the CDC when we should have increased funding but we can't fix stupid in this country!

Ehhh, I find the gun debate akin to sex education for teenagers; increase education/awareness rather than try to abolish sexuality/gun-ownership altogether. Heighten background checks? Yes! Make contraceptive methods more readily available/affordable/common-knowledge? Yes!

Outside argument; if two dipshits bring a child into the world accidentally, it's likely that THAT child will be on the streets misguided, uneducated, and misusing firearms. I mean, aside from undiagnosed psychopaths, who is REALLY shooting up other folks?

Well, now that it's in NYC I'm guessing we're going to start seeing some real panic.

Honestly, I don't buy into the media hype about stuff like this, but I must say that getting that e-mail was a tad disconcerting.

You bet. I'm literally on a flight out of NY right now!

(I mean, I'm going to visit my daughter in Florida, but still)

It's demonstrating how clearly unprepared we are for viral pandemic.

I don't either. I heard a joke yesterday about how twice as many people in the US have been married to Larry King as have tested positive for ebola (that was before this new one). The media loves a sensation, and this has all the fingerprints.

Although this is unfortunately true. This is what happens when we as a country get too complacent about stuff like this and we decide that it's not important enough to make a priority. The last few global scares left us relatively untouched, and we as a country just kind of decided that it'll never happen here. Now, I'm not saying that ebola is going to go all Contagion on us (I honestly don't think it's going to), but the fact that these few cases have been contracted despite all of the protocols does show that we should be doing better.
