10-2-07 Set Picks/Discussion (Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, CA)

Show #37
10/2/2007
Hollywood Bowl
Hollywood, CA

Show Begins @ 8:05 pm PDT, 11:05 pm ET

Show Info:

Quote:
Opener: Stephen Marley
Capacity: 17383

The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. It officially opened in 1922 on the site of a natural amphitheatre formerly known as the Daisy Dell, and has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since then. The Bowl is also home to a second resident ensemble, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

The Hollywood Bowl is well known for its band shell, a distinctive set of concentric arches that has graced the site since 1929. Popular entertainers including Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Judy Garland have given famous or noteworthy performances under the shell. Cartoon buffs may see a resemblance between the concentric arches of the shell and Porky Pig's backdrop in Th-th-that's all, f-f-folks; it is debatable whether it was intentional (however, the Bowl did make appearances in various Warner Brothers cartoon shorts, at least one DePatie-Freleng Pink Panther cartoon, and a Tom and Jerry cartoon).

Shortly after the end of the 2003 summer season, the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County, which owns the Hollywood Bowl (seating capacity 17,383), replaced the 1929 shell with a new, somewhat larger, acoustically improved shell, which had its debut in the 2004 summer season. Preservationists fiercely opposed the demolition for many years, citing the shell's storied history. However, even when it was built it was (at least acoustically) only the third-best shell in the Bowl's history, behind its two immediate predecessors (which were designed by Lloyd Wright, the son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright). By the late 1970s the Hollywood Bowl became an acoustic liability because of continued hardening of its transite skin. The new shell incorporates design elements of not only the 1929 shell, but of both the Lloyd Wright shells. During the 2004 summer season, the sound steadily improved, as engineers learned to work with its live acoustics.

I'll be awaiting the riots tomorrow when they repeat a bunch of songs and don't play Sugar Will/Last Stop/Blue Water.

Tour shouldn't be ending at the Hollywood Bowl. Everything I've been hearing about this place says the setlist is not going to be the kind of flavor we go for here.

all they really have to do, imo, with the set tonight is be solid with it. there's tons of songs they've played this tour that weren't played last night. what they need to do is choose from that group carefully. wayg/hftgl/wtwe/etc don't all need to be in the set, but one or two won't hurt if they choose the rest wisely. so yeah, i'm not necessarily looking for any debuts as long as they make good choices. and NO REPEATS!

I just feel like what they see as a big tour closer differs from what we see as one. I'm guessing Hunger, WAYG, and WTWE all get played. And I'm guessing there will be a repeat, Cornbread for sure, but maybe Bayou too. I highly doubt this will be the best set of the tour.

If they can put out a solid show tonight though this would cement this tour in my mind as the best overall since '04.

Not knocking the venue since I've never been. People have said the crowd is just not conducive to a fan favorite setlist and the band must know that.

Correct. Not a chance. There's still plenty of cool as hell stuff to come out and make a great set.

Exactly.

Even if Sugar Will were to be played, one song does not make or break a set.

There's probably too many "unknown" tunes in here for a Hollywood set, but we shall see.
