It didn’t pan out. Just watched the performance and wondered what could’ve been.
Well, Emmylou Harris opened. Lanois has been her producer. My guess is it was Emmylou opening where Lanois lived. Dave probably had nothing to do with why he was there.

I feel like I remember comments from Lanois saying he had little interest in producing them? Or was that someone else?

It was a rough morning. Don't normally drink on weeknights but was all giddy and warm from the first one.

Im not sure if they get enough love or not, but those SPAC 2015 shows with Bela have some major highlights.

When he joined the band in the acoustic set, their sound was as close as i think we were ever going to get to the late 90s/early 00s again. Their playing went from fast and loud to much softer so he could pull through in the mix.

Look at this list of songs with Bela Fleck, really top tier mix you could ask for from DMB 3.0

Typical Situation (Acoustic)
Satellite (Acoustic)
Ants Marching (Acoustic)
Cornbread
Dreaming Tree
Dont Drink the Water
Improv > Grey Street

Friend of the Devil (Acoustic)
Grace Is Gone (Acoustic)
#41
Spaceman
Lie In Our Graves

And not with Bela Fleck, but there was a Cry Freedom and a true double encore. It really felt like Roi was on everyones mind that weekend. If you listen closely, when they go to the solos in Typical he says "Rooiiiiiii" like the old days. He even smiles a bit to himself because i think he realizes it.

That was the one and only time I went to SPAC; what a great weekend.

Oh man, I wish you'd visited AuRants in Duryea, PA back in its heyday. One year, they ran a 'Christmas In July' special with $2 Mad Elfs. The bartender was new and working alone that night....she was serving them in PINT GLASSES. I thought I was going to die. I'm pretty sure I was hungover for a week.

I don’t remember Lanois ever publicly commenting on producing DMB, or even privately to anyone. He’s obviously always been mentioned as a potential option for a producer, and I think he’d be great for them, but I don’t remember there being any confirmation of his feelings anywhere.

I’d love to see what he could do with DMB and all the awesome sonic landscapes he would create with this lineup. He’s one of the best producers at layering parts. I think he could do a Lillywhite caliber job.

2015 was a decent tour. I wish Bela would play more with the band these days. Him and Victor too. Seems like between 1996 -2002 a few times a year Flecktones members would guest. I guess thats because they were opening a lot then? Since 2002 it’s only been a handful of times Bela or Victor has been a guest.

I mean, I wish Mike Trout would come play wiffle ball with me and my buddies.

But, similarly, why would Bela want to come guest on That Girl Is You? The last time he played with DMB they had him on Old Dirt Hill, amongst other tunes.

Typical and Grace were fantastic. I thought the rest of the spots sounded rough, though no fault of Bela

My Dad knows Lanois. He has never been approached by DMB. He never once said he had no interest. The conversation was short and to the point.

The Best of 3.0 thread forced me to listen to a bit of AFTW again. Gaucho, a song I don't even particularly like, is much more interesting than anything on Come Tomorrow.

I know Boyd fucked up these sessions, but Jeff needs to be front and center on whatever is next. It's refreshing listening to these songs. Boyd, too, but he's obviously long gone.
