yah there's a different between adapting and being able to play your instrument...

Trying not to make a new thread. Does anyone have an mp3 of Shotgun from Deer Creek 07? (08-17-07) The one on Dontburnthepig has really loud wind in it, but I swear I use to have a version that was pretty damn crisp. Maybe from Crumbo or Ice?

Listening to that version, I really hope, if they've recorded it for the new album, that the outro is included. Such a lovely addition.

It occurs to me, in spite of the lyric, Shotgun has a hopeful feel to it.

He could actually have muscle hypertrophy (bulk) throughout his forearm, wrist, hand, and fingers that effect his ability to accurately play the right notes, especially if he has lost range of motion in these areas due to added muscle bulk.

I've heard some other people say this, and I just don't see it. He's definitely got some extra body mass, but what makes him seem so hulkish is really the fact that he's so lean.

Let's not make him sound like Lou Ferrigno. He's in really good shape, but there's nothing over-the-top bulky about him at all.

Let's be honest, Boyd has changed a lot over the years...

Sure, he's always been lean, but he's put on a lot of muscle over the years. I think it's a pretty safe bet to make that flexibility and dexterity are currently not his dominant traits. And while there are many factors which "could" contribute to Boyd's decline musically (decreased motivation/interest, loss of tone/pitch or hearing issues, age changes, etc), it's a definite possibility it may be related to muscle hypertrophy, loss of range of motion, or muscle imbalances.

He's always been a very toned fella. Even in 1998, which was his worst year to date, he wasn't as jacked as he is now.

He had a terrible time with the effects he was trying to play with during some of those BTCS songs that year and he was so loud that year too, which really didn't help at all. Then the following year he was equally as bad but had some ok shows here and there. It's been like that ever since 1998 though. Since 1998, Boyd has tours where there are a few runs of shows where he's fantastic, and the rest he's so up and down. 1997 was probably the last tour where he was solid throughout the whole tour.

I'm not saying he hasn't always been tone, but I see a clear difference in his arms, especially more bulk in the forearms, which is the origin attachment for many of the muscles that go into the wrist, hand, and fingers. I won't get into the technical aspects, but increased muscle bulk in the forearms can lead to decreased dexterity/flexibility in the wrist and hand, as well as inflame tendons or nerves in this area, which in turn can cause reduced grip strength, influence joint movement, and decrease coordination. Again, I'm not saying it's the definitive reason in his decline in his performance, just saying that it's a possibility (and perhaps a likely contributor).

Oh i most certainly think his lifting hasn't helped his playing at all. I agree with you there. I was just saying his absolute worst year within this band came during a time where he wasn't completely jacked.

Yeah. I definitely think there are other factors contributing to his decreased performance live. It's sad that it has gotten to the point where they turn him down so low in the live mix that you can't even hear him (unfortunately for the better in many cases).

No offense Monk, I think you're just sharing an honest thought, but I'd be willing to bet $100 that muscle mass is not what's making him a shitty violinist. I think he just doesn’t practice enough and sucks because of it. It really doesn’t seem like muscle mass is going to obstruct him from playing; we’re not talking about optimum flexibility needed to play the instrument. It seems pretty straight forward.

Who knows, I mean I could totally be wrong. Personally, I just don't think he's dedicated to playing his instrument. Dude just wants to get high, lift weights and eat ice cream.

Yup.

Which is why none of us can come down too hard on the man.

Could arthritis be a cause? Maybe his doctor(s) told him weightlifting would help build strength?

But actually, given what Lillywhite said about Boyd taking 15 takes to get a perfect version and then flubbing the next, I guess he's just a hit-or-miss violinist.

Anyway, I loved those little additions to Shotgun he made years ago. Shame they were cut.
