The encore in a show like this reminds me of how much more they are capable of than the standard Sister/Watchtower type encores.

I have no big gripes with setlists in general, but they should really get more creative with encores. Start by shelving Watchtower for a year.

I only agree with half your statement. I really think they should do a better job of mixing up their E1s. But the fact of the matter is there are only a few songs in their catalog that they should close shows with. They closed one of my shows with Shake Me and that was deeply unsatisfying.

I can't think of anything they've written in the last ten years that makes an effective closer. If they're in the studio writing new songs then maybe they can work on creating a new closer. That would be nice.

Yea, simply put, this release really represents DMB at a time when they were at their peak. Whether it be new song creation creativity, setlist variation, technical playing skills improved, Dave's strong vocals, great lyrics in songs, etc.. This era really has it all.

"What You Are" is a decent closer when it's not overplayed. Although this song was written 11 years ago now. 2004 version of "Hello Again" with the full intro may work, but that might just be a better opener though.

These guys do horrible encores for the most part. But to argue your statement, here ya go.

So Right
What You Are
Grey Street
JTR
Hello Again
You Might Die Trying
Sweet Up and Down

i don't think any of those songs would be a very good way to end a show.

sure it's predictable, but the few songs they use now are the best ones for the job.

So Right - 2001, and I'm not sure
What You Are - 2001, yes (never got why people were down on this as a closer)
Grey Street - 2000, yes
JTR - 2000, yes
Hello Again - maybe if they hadn't completely forgotten about it
You Might Die Trying - no, I like it but it's not a show closer
Sweet Up and Down - 2000 and maybe if Dave can settle on lyrics instead of yelling, and if it eventually makes an album
As far as my last point I think it has to be an album song because a show closer needs to be something the casual fan is aware of. A closer needs energy and if most of the crowd isn't familiar with the song they won't get into it.

Yeah, E1's can definitely be mixed up easily. Dave can play almost anything solo in that spot, no reason to just rotate the same couple of tunes each tour. And E2's in 3 song encores could be virtually anything.

I think they can close shows with:
Ants
Two Step
Billies
DIDO
Warehouse
Typical
Grey Street
Too Much
LIOG
DDTW
Halloween
Last Stop
Rapunzel

and songs I'm not necessarily in favor of closing, but work:
Stay
YMDT
What You Are

and I know I'm forgetting some

I don't see YMDT, DIDO, Typical, or Graves as encores. The rest I'm on board with, as well as Watchtower or Thank You for covers to close with. That's 14 good closers which should be enough if they mix them up.

Now I'd love to see YMDT, DIDO, Typical, or Graves in E1. Or anything aside from the typical slow song/Dave solo number.

I think a SET closer should be something that everyone is familiar with, but I'm actually a fan of wildass random encores. Rare covers, or strange songs from the back catalog, whatever.

I'd be totally happy with encores like #34 / Sweet Up And Down. Or Money > Money (That's What I Want). Or, back when they had Butch, an encore of Blackbird > Steady As We Go would've worked for me (though probably people will disagree with that, but whatever).

So, using only songs they wrote from the last decade, how about Loving Wings / Shotgun? You can't tell me you would go to a show that ended with that and walk out thinking "that was BULLSHIT." Or Out Of My Hands / You Never Know. Or A Dream So Real / So Damn Lucky. Or Lying In The Hands Of God / Squirm.

See I feel just the opposite. I'm all for off the wall set closers. I think a show should end with a bang.

Just started this since I think this discussion is worthy of it's own thread:

its baffling they didn't make that a regular encore, esp. after they added the salsa jam to warehouse. i saw warehouse close a few times in 2005 and i thought it worked pretty well.

Imo I would be very surprised if they EVER release something that's as good as the overall quality of this release. This is the perfect blend of the perfect setlist, performance, and mix. Don't get me wrong I wish we would get something that tops this but I just don't see it ever happening. Anybody else agree?

Sure.

Plus this release is such a favorite of mine, and imprinted on my brain, it'd be hard to find too many releases that I'd like more.
