The lyrics are no worse than some found on Stand Up and even here and there on BWATGGK. It's a bit cliche, but the music is cool. I'm indifferent. I would be happy if they brought it back, and I will be just fine if it stays a pre-1994 rarity

song sucks. lyrics suck. they may not be any worse than what he shits out today, but that doesn't make them excusable either.

lol I was waiting for your response and while I usually agree some of your opinons, I think this one isn't as bad lyrically as some of the shit that has been made over the past 5 years. If "Can't Stop" or "Smooth Rider" can get play time, then so can this one.

It's one of those songs that tries to say too much, and does so poorly. Most of his most recent efforts say nothing at all.

hearing an extra nasally dave trying to growl out "damn you big city! black city!" is pretty bad. |

it's not exactly the same, but Seek Up was a much more effective attempt at a similar lyrical idea.

Cheesy and poorly written, but I would bet that if you enjoy most of what Dave has written over the past 5 years you probably enjoy SPotlight. Not an insult even though I am sure it comes across as one.

Bad song, although unlike some here I don't think the lyrics are the main problem. They're not great by any stretch of the imagination, but they're not horrible on paper. The music is just too cheesy and hackneyed for me. It sounds like a bad DMB cover band. And I'm not a fan of Dave's early voice, so that colors it for me.
I don't really hear much of later DMB in this at all; the sound of it directly takes me to 1992-era DMB, before Peter left the band. His parts always had a certain aspect to them that didn't really work for me. |

I agree that it's not his best lyrics, but the message and theme is pretty cool. The chorus is the catchiest part by far.

it's funny you say "a topic not too often discussed" cause it was THE hot topic on messageboards back in the 90s. All those 'Bring back Spotlight' campaigns. Sheesh

IIHIA is solid song. Versions without the Lovely Ladies, of course.
The 06/07 ones with the Holding Back the years interplotation are top ones. |

Spotlight discussion aside, this thread is long overdue.
