You have a filthy run of shows in front of you.

8/2, 8/4, 8/7, 8/8, 8/9, 8/13, 8/14, 8/18 - 8/23...

Really with the exception of like 3 duds, the rest of the tour could all be considered classics.

Say Goodbye had some nice lyrics in 96 and 97, but it was a concert showpiece from 7.31.98 to 8.6.00.

I'm gonna finally listen to this one this weekend. My apologies for the delay. I started a new job and I'm just adjusting to it. To be honest, I've never given Summer 98 a fair chance, but I really should. Some awesome shows during that summer.

Nah Boyd isn’t bad. Summer ‘99 is a different story.

Dave Matthews Band
08.13.98
Starplex Amphitheatre
Dallas, TX

Warehouse – Wow, the crowd was pumped up for this opener. Warehouse was met with a thunderous applause throughout the performance. This is always a solid choice to begin a show. Great first song!
Heartbeat Intro --> PNP --> Rapunzel – This is definitely the beginning of the Heartbeat Intro, as Roi just played by himself for the most part and Carter joined in at the very end. No bass drum beats, Dave strumming, etc. You could definitely hear Roi’s classic 1998 lines forming though. Pretty cool early version. Rapunzel was fun as always too.
Don’t Drink The Water – There is something really special about the 1998 DDTWs. While I like this song in any form and year, the way the band approached this song during its first year was very cool as well. Awesome and very rare vocal reprise at the end! I wish Dave would do this again once in a while.
Rhyme & Reason – Dave flubbed the lyrics in both the first and second verses, which was funny. However, it was still a passionate performance though.
Say Goodbye – Wow, what an intro! Unlike later Say Goodbye intros, this one built more slowly than normal, which increased the anticipation of the full on Carter & Leroi intros that we are more accustomed to. I found that to be very interesting. This song is always top 5 DMB for me because it is one of their songs that really showcases each band member’s talent. It epitomizes DMB and their musicianship talent. I really miss Boyd’s lines during the chorus. I can’t even remember the last time he played them. What a performance!
Jimi Thing - Here we go. The infamous Carter cricket situation. That must have been very frustrating to attempt to play though. 1998 Jimi Things were solid. I love Roi’s solos on them during that year.
Spoon – First full band performance ever and unplanned too! I think I like the acoustic opening more than Carter’s percussion opening. Both are great in their own way though, but when Dave starts it, it has a darker vibe in my opinion. Very unique version indeed.
Stay – Dave messes up the lyrics in the first. I like 1998 versions of “Stay”, but this one was a little sloppy and could have been better.
Two Step – I absolutely love the ’96-98’ dark era for “Two Step”. Such powerful performances. Amazing.
Lie In Our Graves – LIOG is always a great choice. One of my all-time favorite songs and Boyd wasn’t bad on this particular version.
Crush - Great version! Lots of back and forth jamming on this one. I enjoyed it.
So Much to Say --> ASTB --> Too Much – Pretty standard, which is not a bad thing.
Tripping Billies – I always love versions that contain the “Nature Intro”. That little intro puts Billies on a different level. It’s just badass. Great version.

Encore:

Crash Into Me - The band made a mistake in the middle of the song, which almost made them stop playing the song entirely, but Dave’s vocals carried them through and got them back on track. It was kind of funny actually.
All Along The Watchtower – I really miss those ’96-’98 breakdowns where Boyd would pluck the violin and start off the jam. It was a unique time for AATW. A pretty grungy solo by Stefan as well before the song started.

All in all, I enjoyed listening to this show and choice. It was definitely a unique show during one of DMB's best years. The band took risks (ex. Spoon) and put on a phenomenal show, despite having to deal with the annoying cricket situation. I think this is a testament to their professionalism and showmanship. Would I like to see this show released one day? Yes, but there are a few other Summer '98 shows that I would like to see released as well. Awesome choice and I'm looking forward to the next round

Great review, interested to hear this Crash. Loved those '98 Watchtowers. Gotta say though, nothing comes close to those '95 Jimi's. They should never have changed the jam. Never loved the slowed down '98 jams.
