I'm baffled how anyone thinks big whiskey is a good album

I tend to agree after a few listens. Although I love the run of If Only through Drunken Soldier, I predict I'll find myself listening to CT more often.

I'd still rank CT higher than AFTW, BW, Everyday, and Stand Up.

However, that's more of a product of the last 17 years of releases more than anything. The gap between CT and anything released in the pre-Everyday era is still unbelievably massive.

But as many have said, there's really no right or wrong here. We all have our own likes and opinions. I'm just happy about being pleasantly surprised with a DMB release in 2018.

To put mine into perspective I'm not assigning #'s, I'm going to list takeaway songs from each of the last 3 albums and CT, meaning which ones I would actually want to hear again/think are good studio tracks. Also, nothing they make is probably going to be near the big 3/LWS again as a whole.

Stand Up - YMDT and Hello Again - I think both of these suck ass on the album itself but I can deal with YMDT live and I like Hello Again live

Big Whiskey - LITHOG/Seven/Squirm - Seven is studio like only as I've grown to hate the song live

AFTW - Broken Things/Snow Outside & If Only (yes I like the song so gfy)

CT - Samurai Cop/TGIY/IOY/VITR/B&BB/A&A and DYR - while I think Here on out and When I'm Weary are ok songs it's nothing I'd really to see live

So, I can take away enjoyment from more on CT than I can from almost the last 3 albums combined. Those albums were what killed any interest I had left in the band. It's encouraging to me that I like where they may be possibly headed next with this unit and hope that might lead me to my adult diaper years

I think it's their most authentic record in a long time.
It's not 1998 DMB, but it was never going to be.
I agree with the 98 comment. That's part of our problem here. They are not that Tripping Billies Nancies Dreaming Tree band anymore.....they've evolved and for their current position, this is a fine record.....just not in the traditional DMB visions we constantly see and fight over about.

They aren't that Tripping Billies or Dancing Nancies band anymore, but after hearing their studio cut of Virginia in the Rain, I think they could make another song like The Dreaming Tree again.

Lyrically it would be a struggle, but musically they are more than capable.

Fuck, musically they're capable of anything. It's all about where Dave takes them.

Right, I couldn't believe what I was listening to, so when they would rather promote and play Can't Stop or Girl You, they are pushing the "party" band instead of the musical talent they collectively have and it's sad to see.....

I know what you're trying to do, but this album was mixed, mastered and released.

I understand, but Stand Up was as well. That album is a collection of cool/decent thoughts that needed more work done/better production before it was released. I feel the same way about this album as well.

I'm not going to rate this album yet, but I'm debating between a 3 or 4 at the moment.

These songs are much fuller and complete than Stand Up. There is no comparison at all.

Agreed, but I don't think there's a song on this that's as good as YMDT. More so the song than the production on the stand up cut.

I've grown tired of it in recent years, but I'll take 08/09 YMDT over any of these songs for sure. I've only listened to the record one time through so it's all subject to change.

Again and Again is a neat track, but doesn't really sound like DMB to me.

I'm probably pushing closer to 8 than 7 at this point after a few more listens today.

I really like this album as a whole. Still below AFTW but I'll actually listen to this one as opposed to Busted Stuff which is just awful versions of some of my favorite songs.

The only songs I liked on my first listen were: Samurai Cop, i guess Can't Stop, Again and Again, Idea of You, and Virginia.
