I have the same one.

I think for the money, without spending $600 on a turntable like Malakas, it's as good as you could ask for.

Maybe one day I'll upgrade but for now I'll just stick with this and if I start to notice anything drastic I'll find another needle that isn't stock.

I wanted to start with something a little cheaper, reviews seemed positive. Should I invest in a new stylus? Will that make a difference?

Don't be terrified. Just be careful. I wouldn't use it with rare records, that's all. The problem with that particular model is that you cannot adjust the counterweight, like with other tonearms, so either too much or too little pressure from the stylus is being applied. Too little makes the needle bounce and too much goes too deep into the record. The AT-60 is an "all-in-one" model, do it doesn't allow you to upgrade it customize.

I'm curious what some of you more experienced audiophiles think about the Pono.

Is it a cash grab or will it genuinely change the listening experience? Or a mediocre combination of the two (something that will earn NY some extra scratch, but only deliver to a certain degree that isn't meeting expectations)?

I'm not necessarily the most qualified person to remark on this, but I do know that 24-bit FLAC is nothing new, and there are other portable players for it already. I don't think it's a "cash grab", because I think the intentions are genuine and good, but I don't see it as revolutionary or anything.

Plus, like I said somewhere around here last week, when it comes to digital music, I personally have yet to hear a significant difference b/w lossless and/or 24-bit, and 256 mp3 or aac. I'm not saying a difference doesn't exist, but I know a lot of people can't hear it.

I think you guys in this thread are going down the right path, with vinyl, if you truly want a different listening experience.

I'm just curious because I was kicking around the idea of pledging over at Kickstarter for the Dave Matthews Limited Edition Pono.

You don't get charged until Apr 15th, as its only a 'pledge' at the moment, and you can backout of it. It basically reserves one of the 500 (now ~210) available Limited Edition units.

I'm not a huge audiophile, I mostly started this vinyl thing as a way of experiencing the old music I love. But, I CAN hear the difference, I'm just nearly as well-versed in the terminology of it all.

That said, there's a lot of skeptics with this thing, but if I decide to go ahead and pledge, and get it in October only to find its a bulky iPod that has no real difference (to my ears anyway) and asks me to pay $24.99 for an 'ultra-high resolution' album, then I'd end up selling it to somebody on ebay that is no doubt a DMB Family member and just wants the cool Dave 'gear'.

At any rate... I'll do some more research and educate myself.

Yeah, it's all a personal matter whether there are audible differences to you that make it worthwhile. I actually got into the whole high-end audio thing about 15 years ago when I finally had the money to do so, and started getting out of control with all the cables, etc. I realized, though, that there was a point of diminishing returns for me, and some things made a difference to me, and some didn't. For instance, my little high-end audio system I listen to alot of music on (Creek integrated amp, PSB Alpha speakers, entry-level Kimber Cable) sounds much better to me than one of those all-in-one Bose units or whatever. When I go above that system to more expensive ones, for instance, diminishing returns kick in. One thing I did that did make a difference is, for the computer connected to my amp, I got a $100 USB external DAC that truly does improve the sound compared to letting your computer do the digital-to-analog conversion. I hear the difference with that. And, like I said, I don't really hear the difference b/w the same recording via 256k aac or 24-bit FLAC. And I actually wanted to hear the difference everytime I've tried!

Norah Jones' limited edition unit is going to sell out faster than Dave's.

Norah Jones: 213 left
Dave Matthews [Band]: 273 left

Can you put 24-bit FLAC DMB shows on this thing? That might make me consider then.
