I don't blame you for not liking the song, but there's no denying its improvement. Especially since they sped it back up a bit and improved the end jam.

On top of that, this chorus is just downright cringey: If you stay with me that don't mean we gotta stay the same if you stay with me well baby, you and me we'll change the game Lyrically there are worse songs, but the melody Dave sings on this combined with the lyrics and delivery almost totally ruin the song for me everytime. That's unfortunately the case with almost every 3.0 DMB song. There's always just one section or part that just sound force-fed in and it's either really cheesy or just so random that it destroys the flow.

Dave cannot sing it, though. It might be the only song I've ever heard him sing consistently out of tune on. Studio version is miles better.

I like the vibe of Riff. Cool intro.
But man those lyrics are abysmal. |

Why not? I mean, I am a fucking Bismarck STAN, so my mind is biased. But I won't fight you - I'm just interested in knowing what about it you don't find appealing.

Kitkat nailed it: the riff is forced-together jumbled garbage.

Agreed. I really had faith that COCO was going to become a really good live song, but then they started playing it super slow and allowed Rashawn to have the solo at the end. If they sped it up drastically (even faster than the album version) and gave Jerf the solo instead (and had him play licks throughout) it’d be miles and miles better. I didn’t like the direction they went with it.

I think the version they released from last summer (Indiana?) was a great version that he sang in tune. And a nice slow song, especially the jam.

The Riff is way less of a “jumbled mess” than Shotgun, a song that half this board slobbers all over.

And I also think both songs are weak.

Funny you mention that, the next tournament I’m going to do after this is Best 2.0 song.

The Riff is a great idea that's unfinished and poorly executed. There's some really cool lyrics in the song and a fair bit of cringe. Typical post 2000 Dave Matthews. Not even Lillywhite could salvage it.

Great verse, an atrocity of a chorus.

Shotgun is a jumbled mess, but the music is phenomenal. Blows 'The Riff' out of the water. If they could tighten it up and finish it, it'd be a monster.
