Correct - I meant they released the live track after the sessions were completed, which means the band knew what that song was, but I guess no one told management.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah that’s most likely.

Actually, I think he finds his wife with a woman from this line:

she would have had a chance to get her out the door

Which makes the thing all the more enigmatic to me.

Nah. Pretty sure it's him. He's just singing so softly it's hard to make out, even with headphones.

Regardless, it's one of Dave's best most-direct lyrical efforts. Shame it never went anywhere. Can't see it making anything but a rarities box set now.

Good call, that one is brutally dark as well. I really do think these sessions had some pretty solid ideas, lyrically and musically. There were a few dudes but overall all I think they could have had a solid album had they continued that route.

This is what i hear as well. I saw the lyric of this the other day and was very surprised someone thought he was saying her.

I have actually been listening to these lately. To me they have much more playback value than Come Tomorrow. I enjoy the Come On from the first disc with the different intro, wish they kept that.

I go back to these a lot:

Early Home
Come On (Disc 1)
Kill the King
Break for It

I'm probably in the minority, but the song/jam Robert Randolph is still my favorite, it has a slightly different aesthetic compared to the pro-tools heavy sound on the other "unfinished" tracks.

Plus, it somewhat leans more into the musical territory that I prefer from DMB.... Boisterous musicianship, whether played straightforward or otherwise.

Would love to see more done with those, at least sensibly speaking.

I felt the same way until I did bust them out later on and give them a listen again. The second run through is really disappointing. They don't hold up at all for me. It was really exciting and cool when they first came out, but there's really nothing there to like unfortunately. Everything is just too unfinished and raw.

Listened to the second Disk for the first time and really enjoyed it. There are some great nuggets, but definitely rough. Also, this version of CoCo is far superior to the Come Tomorrow version with all the Drunken Soldier-esque breaks. Red Glare, Early Home, Drive Me Away and Celebrate I would welcome on an actual release.

That's too bad you feel that way, and obviously you're entitled to that but while they are aren't polished and too raw for you, that is exact reason I love many of these tunes. The Lillywhite Sessions were very raw too (admittedly not as raw as some of these) and the unfinished lyrics give an interesting take on both the LS and Batson Sessions.

I’m probably in the minority but I prefer the CT version of the song musically. It just sounds so big and full on the album. But I will say Dave offers more lyrical variety in the batson sessions version and I would have preferred that on the CT version

They’re nowhere near as finished. I think some of them could become really good songs, but they’ll probably never be worked on or see the light of day again. I’m more interested in the sessions from Cavallo then what we got from Batson, but so be it.

COCO is much better on CT than on these sessions. They do a few interesting things on these, but it's way too raw.

The third Batson disc from these sessions would be interesting, but these songs are too unfinished to really enjoy.
