As a Phillies fan, what is it i'm not liking about this trade? Are you just happy with the return or do you think JT is overrated?

Nah, JT's the best catcher in baseball, but he wasn't signing an extension to stay in Miami and Marlins Park actually murdered his numbers (just wait to see him put up 30 HR's a year playing in CBP.)

I'm thrilled with the return, Sanchez is a legit top SP prospect with ace upside and the only knock on him is his conditioning, but he's only 19. Alfaro is a fantastic defensive catcher who I watched a ton in Allentown and Reading in '16-17 and I feel like he only has room to grow (and is under club control for 4 seasons.) Anything else they get (Moniak? Garcia?) is a bonus.

Oh ok, cool. Sixto Sanchez (coolest name in sports) is our top prospect, it's tough to part with him, but Phillies are looking to compete now. Also pretty convenient that Harper and Realmuto are good friends.

It certainly doesn't hurt. I think the Phillies are going to overpay a tad since it's an in-division trade, but I also don't see the Marlins putting up a fight until 2021 at the earliest, so by then, Realmuto's existing deal is done, so no real coulda woulda shoulda on Miami's end.

Either way, I'm excited for baseball season once this deal finally gets done.

Obviously I would have preferred JT head out of the NL East. I'll be really bummed if Machado and Harper both end up in NL East too.

How many teams has Harper met with? I know he supposedly met with the Giants at some point earlier in the week.

No one seems to think the Phillies are overpaying here. I canít beleive this is the deal the Marlins waited for so long for.

Ha. I can see him going back to Nats and Machado to Phils. Yuck.

MLB is renaming the "Disabled List" the "Injured List" because they don't want to offend anyone using the word "disabled" wtf

Not only that, now when they say 'Tim Tebow has been placed on the IL' I'm always going to think they're sending him to Syracuse and not to the DL.

The Marlins weren't going to get a better deal than a ML ready player, a top prospect, a third piece and bonus pool money.

Meh, I haven't been impressed with Alfaro. And for a young pitching prospect to have knocks on his conditioning (i.e., dedication) and had elbow issues this past year, Sixto Sanchez doesn't seem like a great score to me. (But awesome name). But hey, it's your team so if you're happy (or just drinking the kool-aid), good for you!

Goddammit, just ran the random draft order for the 12-team fantasy baseball league I run- 15 years and I've never had the top pick (never higher than 3), thought this would be my year. Nope. 11th.

This is probably old news, but it's just unfortunate and sad to read:

Jose Fernandez had "conditioning issues," too. Alfaro's arm/defense is top notch and if he can get his strikeout ratio down, he'll be in the top tier of catchers.....plus, Realmuto wanted 160M+; Marlins were offering ~$60M. That's a chasm that they weren't going to close. Like I said, this is the best possible return for a guy who's gone in a year anyway.

That's so sad. It's amazing to me that there are people actually arguing against the protective netting.

Disagree, there were talks of the Mets trading Degrom or Syndergaard at one point to get him, and talks of yankees trading gary sanchez and andujar for him. They definitley didn't get top pieces back, but it's not like they got nothing, either, Sanchez is a top prospect. That being said, Jeter really hasn't done a great job so far overall imo.

The Mets weren't ever going to trade their aces for him and the Yankees would've likely traded one of Sanchez (whom I can't stand) or Andujar, but not both. I feel like that's all hearsay until the negotiations get close, and when they got close, the Mets and Yankees (and Dodgers, where JT would've been a great fit,) were nowhere to be found.

The teams submitting the 'best offers' to the end were the Phillies, Braves, Padres and Reds. Braves weren't willing to part with any top prospects, Phillies offered Sanchez+ and that was better than the prospects the Reds were offering, in the end.

They asked for Andujar and Sanchez, the Yankees were never gonna give up either.

Alfaro had a 4% walk rate and 60% Contact rate last year. Heís gonna have to learn how to hit the ball if he even wants to sniff anywhere close to ďtop tier of catchersĒ. Sanchez is a total toss up, who knows. (And, not that itís a huge difference for this sake but Realmuto had 2 more years of control, not one).

I donít mean to be harassing you, just enjoy debating baseball stuff,, especially in early February!

Yup. It should have been everywhere long ago. Glad Citi Field has it now.

Yup, Marlins probably could have gotten Andujar. They overplayed their hand. Mets and Yankees both moved on.
