With last night's passing of B.B. King, we have put together the following list of tribute covers the band has played when other beloved musicians have died:

Date Cover Song Tribute to...
8.11.95 Eyes of the World Jerry Garcia (8.1.42–8.9.95)
9.13.03 Ring of Fire Johnny Cash (2.26.32–9.12.03)
8.7.04 Super Freak Rick James (2.1.48–8.6.04)
6.26.09 I'll Be There Michael Jackson (8.29.58–6.25.09)
6.13.12 Brass Monkey MCA (8.5.64–5.4.12)

Eyes of the World will always be my favorite, but that little Ring of Fire is super lovely.

They did it almost a year after he died so I don't think it counts.

I'm going to throw this out there --

I wish the liberation list was still on the front page -- because I feel like it being the first thing that loads when you bring up the site is the best chance of anyone involved with the band seeing it and figuring out "Oh hell, it's really been 5 years since song X was played..."

I agree 100% and am already working on it.

I just checked those out and I've decided that the next LT has to be from Deer Creek. Preferably something between '98 and '04, but we need a Deer Creek show out there. It's ridiculous that there aren't any.

Well, yes, but there are 15 more shows that have happened at Deer Creek than MSG. There are a lot of MSG shows I would be ecstatic getting, but Deer Creek has far more shows played there and no releases than any other venue.

For me, I haven't been told anything like this, but you just sort of feel they were going to, they already would have. You hear in other industries and I'm sure this one as well, it's really expensive to play MSG, I don't think there would be extra steps to release a show from there. It's just a gut feeling that hopefully be proven wrong. Lots of bands have released shows from there.

There are definitely extra steps to release a show that has random guest spots that wouldn't be written into the opening acts' contracts. So something like 12.21.02 becomes really difficult. I'm sure that's an issue with 6.5 & 6.7.98 as well. Getting clearance from Bela for those two is probably no sweat or Warren Haynes for 12.3.98 - I'd guess those are a fax and fax back. But getting clearance from the estate of Big Voice Jack is I'd guess a more significant challenge.
