Well played. Originally from NY but been here since '96 so I've developed a bit of an accent.

My family's nursery farm is in Pennsylvania. When I was 11 or so Dad started sending me out there to live and work with my cousins on the farm for 2 months each summer. To this day, I fall right back into that Pennsylvania-Dutch accent as soon as I hit the property. And some of it has just worked itself organically into my everyday speaking voice. And of course the funny nuances of how things are said.

In Michigan, for example, everyone says "anyway, just leave it there" or "next to the Walmart" whereas I've picked up and kept "anyhow, just let it there" and "beside the walmart."

And inflection of different parts of sentences is interesting.

Just booked our yearly "post-football depression trip" for late February. Looks like San Diego this time around (we hit San Francisco last year at the same time). Any tips/must-see things? We'll be staying right around the Gaslamp Quarter.

I went on a road trip to New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah two weeks ago. Checked out the Grand Canyon and Monument Park in Utah. Gorgeous places, almost surreal. Also, I think New Mexico must have the nicest people in America.

How was Arizona? We were thinking about going there, but opted for San Diego instead.

Very pretty, though there's nothing prettier in the state than the Grand Canyon. It really lives up to the hype - it's beyond words.

I'll tell you, when you leave the Grand Canyon and start driving north towards Utah you feel like you're driving on the surface of Mars. You're in LITERALLY the middle of nowhere. It's kind of creepy if you're driving alone (as I was), because you know if you break down you're 100 miles from nothing.

Cool. I'll make it out there one day, it's something I've always wanted to do. We were talking about Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff, etc. but perhaps another trip.

Got back last night from 6 days at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico. Great time for the whole family, but I'm pretty sure I gained around 10 pounds just drinking tequila, eating like a pig, and laying around the beach and pool all day.

So you'd rather spend all-inclusive money to eat healthy and be sober?

When I went to Miami in September, the food was so bad/expensive I think I lost weight. Gotta go somewhere else next vacation.

I could see expensive, but bad? Wow, wouldn't have expected that at all.

I can't wait to eat a shit ton of fish tacos in SD.

Haha, I don't drink much or eat meat - I am absolutely not a good person for all-inclusive resorts. The people who drink the most definitely get a better deal.

Have any of you been to Costa Rica? We're debating between Costa Rica or northern Europe for a family vacation. CR definitely sounds more fun, but my daughter is 4 so she won't be able to do a lot of the activities. Would it be worth it?

(extra info: we live in San Diego, so while the beaches will be awesome, it isn't that rare for any of us).

Actually, new plan (from my previous post that no one responded to) -- we've decided to go to northern Europe. So, does anyone have any travel suggestions/ideas on Denmark, Norway and/or Sweden? We will definitely go to Copenhagen, but I'm not sure whether it's worth going north from there. And the other debate is Switzerland or Austria to spend a few days in the Alps. Anyone?

No advice here, just jealousy. I can't even afford to drive to Atlantic City for a weekend right now.

Haha, well, I can't necessarily afford to go. I'm just fortunate enough to have earned a 5-week sabbatical from work so I kind of have to go somewhere!
