Are you a shitty tipper?

So, I'm eating breakfast at this great place in Denver, and beside me I just watched a guy (seemingly one with money based on how he was dressed and accessorized) bust out the calculator on his phone to figure out a 15% tip on a $12 bill.

The service he received seemed fine. He cleared his plate. He didn't seem disappointed in anything about his experience.

And then he left a $1.80 tip.

What the fuck is wrong with people? Are you a "calculator buster-outer" on small food tabs?

I mean, $1.80 seems reasonable for a $12 breakfast. I'd have likely left $3 to even it out to $15, but still, 15% is the standard, right?

I'm probably too good of a tipper most of the time. I like to tip well.

My wife has also noticed that hot waitresses seem to get an extra bonus from me as well

No, 20% is the standard.

I hate tipping, but I always over compensate and tip way too much. I just want it to disapear. On my bill just add an 18% service fee and let me be done with it. Pay the servers a real wage and let them pay taxes like everyone else.

And I get real anxiety on vacation. Ruins it. "Do I tip this guy? I probably got to tip this fucking guy. I only have 20s. Fuck it, I guess he gets a 20." Then my wife is like, "did you just tip that guy? Don't do that." Well he was just standing here. HATE IT.

Assuming it's a standard, easy breakfast a 12 dollar breakfast I'm probably leaving 15.

I don't ever go to a calculator unless it's to make sure I'm not going too low.

While I never worked in the food industry (aside from 2 months at a Panera almost a decade ago), I was a caddy. I know what it's like to get stiffed while giving good service. That stuck with me and I try to tip well as much as I can.

That said, I usually leave way more than anyone else I know to the point where I pick up their slack.

I worked as a (shitty) waiter for a year in high school, so I'm always fairly generous (20% rounded to the next while dollar is my standard). I'll easily go higher, but you have to be a really terrible waiter for me to go below 15%.

Yup I hate the gray areas of who/how much to tip, and vacations bring out the most of those situations

I have two friends for sure I have to do this with. We are good friends, good to a point I've mentioned to them I think they're shitty tippers.

I leave 20% always without even thinking about it unless the service is egregiously bad. If they're very good and enhanced my overall experience I'll leave a little more.

20% is standard, hell the waitress we had friday night spilled our waters all over the table and she still got 20%.
You have to really piss us off to get a shitty tip, even then we know somethings arent under the servers control, like that asshole hostess just triple sat or quadruple sat your section of tables we understand.

Question about tipping your bartender:

Is $1 per drink pretty standard? Am I over tipping if I tip $2 and all my bartender did was pour two beers? Should it be more for mixed drinks?

I usually do $1 per drink, or maybe $5 total if it's 3 or more drinks. And if I have a tab, then the usual 20%

I still do $1 a beer but often wonder if that is not enough now that a beer is like $7/$8. But then I think it took the dude / dudette like 17 seconds and it isn't worth more than $1. But, like mitch said I'll do 20% if I have a tab.

Whoa.

I don't tip percentages on alcohol, I'll pull that off the bill, tip 20% on food, then a couple bucks on alcohol.

To be clear though, we almost never drink liquor, only wine or beer, which amounts to just pouring from a bottle or tap, not mixing 37 ingredients.

I drink liquor, but mine also only involves only 1 ingredient.
