That title track is very Pink Floydish.

Yes. He's compared to Floyd more than anyone else so far. His debut album even moreso.

He's very in touch with his '70s influences apparently. Just added 'Cecil Taylor' in the original post, which features Crosby and Nash.

'Dear Friend' is the first song of his that I heard. Had me sold from first listen. Solid stuff

Yeah listening to Dear Friend right now, great stuff, very 70s, glad to see people still understand how to make music like this.

Very nice my friend.

The images in the video compliment the music wonderfully.

Good grief.... digging more into this guy.

If he's this unknown he must be damn good and well-respected, and it won't be long before he's a bigger name. Listen to all these guests, contributors, and influences on this thing:

Quote:
Wilson told me that Brazilian artist Milton Nascimento was another major influence on Fanfare. At various times I can also hear echos of Traffic, the Dead, Laura Nyro, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Gene Clark and Tom Petty—Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench guest on Fanfare, as do Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka “Father John Misty”), Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith and Wilco’s Patrick Sansone who did the incredible string arrangements of the title number. Folk legend Roy Harper contributed lyrics.

Songwriter/Producer as well. Apparently these records epitomize the recent comeback of the vinyl craze, if you're into that sort of thing.

Quote:
It’s wide-vista, super Cinemascope music. Not too many artists have really attempted as complex an album as this one is in a long time—Kate Bush would be an obvious exception, so as you can see Wilson’s operating in rarefied company—where there’s like 64 tracks going at once. Fanfare, I predict, will become THE hi fi salesman’s go-to demo disc for the next decade.

Wilson on the recording process of the title track:

Quote:
“I was going for this sort of ‘widescreen’ sound, a blown out vista. I wanted strings, horns, bells, vibes, voices, solos, improvisation and a full orchestra on some of the tunes… I didn’t just want ‘a’ drum sound, I wanted it to sound like Thor’s snare sound, stuff like that. Having that 9-foot Steinway was central to achieving the sound that I wanted.” Fanfare was recorded to 2” analog tape and then mixed down to inch tape at Jackson’s Browne’s Groove Masters studio in Santa Monica through a Neve 8078 analog console. The recording used a live echo chamber extensively.

pulled quotes from this review, which calls 'Fanfare' the 'most important album of 2013': [Only registered users can see links.]

I knew this guy sounded familiar. He performed at the awesome [Only registered users can see links.] Jerry Garcia 70th birthday tribute (out on DVD/Blu Ray now, highly recommended documentary and live performances by a variety of artists). I think he has also guested with Furthur.

Ya know... it always amazes me how much my favorite acts run together. Some of the newer acts I enjoy are all a part of this 'Move Me Brightly' piece. Vampire Weekend's drummer, Paul Simon's kid Harper, etc. So it makes perfect sense that I would enjoy Wilson's work.

I love discoveries like this. I'll have to check out that docu-concert for sure.

It makes me so happy to see this thread. I've been posting about this guy on ufck, a DRA board and here and seemingly no one is interested.

He just added US tour dates for February.

I'll admit he jumped on my radar for producing Fear Fun. This guy is really special.

Yeah, that's why I quoted your post from the 'What album...' thread. I happened by that post and didn't recognize the guy so I started checking him out and BAM... next thing you know I felt like a dedicated thread was necessary.

You got a link to the US tour dates? I can't seem to find them. His website doesn't want to work for me right now. Thanks.

He's a hell of a producer too. The entire song is great, but the second half is a real jam.

The record is stellar. His production talent is definitely evident, the longevity of these tracks is ridiculous, especially because it keeps your attention.

Have the Carson Daly appearance waiting on my DVR. Kind of bummed he's sticking to the east coast at the beginning of the year, but not surprised. Hopefully he'll make his way back through.

Piano heavy to start, then trips into a psychedelic jam at the end. Great tune.
[Only registered users can see links.]

This song reminds me of Jackson Browne (the production during the end jam is incredible)

Lovestrong is easily the most played for me at the moment, when I only have time for one song or so...

Its hard not to listen to this thing all the way through though.

I think it's the song I need to start sending to people to get them to listen to this guy.

Had a friend over last night. Perfect length of a record for a long session. Burned plenty
