Do you write your own music?

Just curious.

Where's the "I try but seem to fail most of the time" option?

I can write music fairly well, but lyrics....that's another story.

I'm just really starting to get into writing. I've got a couple originals, but mostly play the covers (that's mainly what people hire me to play).

But by the end of the year, I hope I'll have enough to record a CD that I can sell at shows

They're easy for me. Then when I actually read 'em out loud...I realize they suck.

The one thing that's really helped me is allowing myself to have the freedom to write bad songs (or at least ones that I'm not all that happy with). What sucks in my mind may strike a chord in someone else. That realization is very freeing.

I mean, there are people out there who like Dreamgirl, after all

does anyone record what they play? if so, what do you use to record?

I play only acoustic, and have messed around with Steinberg's Nuendo, the only problem is I think what I play sounds like a bag o' shit so I end up deleting it. I spent several hundred $$ on a soundcard and mics about 4 years ago, and have only saved 3 partial ideas.

I write contemporary/modern classical music... the extent of my mainstream writing is mostly just horn lines. I really wish I would've picked up a guitar 10 years ago...

on a side note, are there really not that many musicians on these boards? This forum is a bit empty...

I guess not, unless there are a lot but there's just nothing here yet, and nothing to talk about so no one really starts up anything. We may never know....

sometimes i feel like i've done a good job with lyrics, sometimes i feel like they are poor. i'm not really a fan of anything that i've written, but i can usually look on the finished product and tell whether or not the song is good.

I find it boring learning/playing other people's music. It's fun here & there or to jam with people. But my passion is creating music. Don't think I could ever be happy if I wasn't able to play a guitar

I said I play mostly my own material...although, to be fair, when I'm working in the studio, I play a lot of other people's music. But with my band, we play probably 70% originals to 30% covers, and I write all our lyrics and either write, or help write, the music to every song.
