Klooner's comparison post a couple pages back really sums it up nicely. Nicely done, sir. AFTW, then CT, then BW. And the reasons why, he listed.

It's amazing to me that they were able to do something to make me not outright hate Can't Stop.

That song was firmly planted in my Bottom 10 DMB songs, and the changes they made to it were enough to get out of that category for me, just a by a bit.

changes they made to it? wasn't this version recorded in '06? the "changes" are what made it worse for you

Can't stop is still garbage. That bridge is so cringe inducing and the rest of it is just generic and uninspiring.

This is the record that finally got my 58 year old mother in law into DMB so there's that. But she likes to party so she should fit in at the next Twin Cities gig just fine.

I guess I'm having a hard time seeing what people hear that is changed in Can't Stop to all of the sudden make them like it. It's the same song it's always been, but a horrible bridge added.

1) Faster tempo
2) enough changes to make it slightly more interesting
3) Shorter

It used to be just that one blues riff, the chorus and then the same blues riff with a boring solo over it. Now it's at least more than just a slow standard blues jam. Still sucks, but definitely more bearable. No longer have to worry about it sucking 15 minutes out the show

I also think the drum part, Stefan's approach, and the horn lines are all improvements over the other version. And the way the studio version reprises then peters out is something I find enjoyable. I don't skip it, which surprises me.

Can't Stop isn't great, but it's tolerable for the most part. Let's not pretend that it's TGIY-level bad.

This was always a bottom 3 song for me, but i do enjoy the "so hungry you make me" part of the song on the album.

The new album, to me so far, is exceedingly mediocre and live stuff I’ve heard on the DMB Sirius channel with the new lineup is fucking awful.

I hope seeing them live is a different ballgame.

They are playing new 2018 lineup stuff on Sirius?

(edit - I guess they streamed Deer Creek)

The reason I prefer the old version better is because the slowed down tempo gave Dave a chance to change up his vocal delivery. By the third time around his vocal gave the song a crescendo. There's no crescendo or build up now, it's just a sped up hot mess.

After a month, I'm still so torn on this cut of Black and Bluebird. While I love the song, Dave's acoustic guitar parts, Jeff's solo, and Buddy's additions, I find myself disappointed with the overall product. I don't like the way Carter's drums come in and that awesome bridge with that slide Dave plays feels cut way too short to make an impact. I enjoy the cut but it feels too neutered, rushed, and strangely folksy to me.

I loved the airy 2015 live versions. The way the drums and horns sound are much more natural and up front. I've listened to the live debut, CO version with Bela, and Alpine Live Trax version dozens of times each.
