DMB at Gorge 2011? ...Maybe!!

[Only registered users can see links.]

Though thousands of Dave Matthews Band fans were heartbroken at the news that the band planned to take 2011 off, Matthews said this afternoon that he hopes the band does make a concert appearance somewhere next summer. Specifically, Matthews says he's been thinking about the Gorge, where the band has spent Labor Day Weekend for the last five years.

"For the last ten years, by this stage of this year, I would know what I was doing for at least six months of next year," Matthews told us in a phone interview from his home in Wallingford this afternoon. "I want to stop that from happening for a year. And then, if we decide, well there's this cool thing happening here, why don't we go play there. I really enjoy playing the Gorge. I haven't decided on it, but maybe we'll do something like that or a version of that."

The DMB's annual residency at the Gorge--which has historicallypacked out the 22,000-person venue all three nights-- has conflicted with Seattle's Bumbershoot, a festival that has struggled with attendance in recent years. One Reel, the festival's non-profit parent, laid off 8 of their 14 full-time festival staffers in October. A DMB-free Labor Day weekend conceivably could have been a boon for Bumbershoot, and free up thousands of local festival-goers.

So, would Matthews consider bringing his show to Bumbershoot rather than the Gorge in 2011?

"Yeah, I would consider it," he says. "I certainly haven't made any plans. The way I was thinking about it maybe I was always thinking, 'Maybe I"ll play the Gorge.' But I hadn't actually thought of that. So maybe you've added a new twist for me into how to view whether or not to (play) that show. Or what to do with it. Maybe do Bumbershoot instead."

Meanwhile, Seattle fans have a chance to catch Matthews and guitarist Tim Reynolds at McCaw hall on Dec. 6 and 7 in a benefit for Just Give and their myriad associated charities.

We'll post more of our interview with Matthews in the coming days.

haha this was great. Im sure we will know well ahead of time. THere are a many of people in the community that are friends with Scott from Wildhorse. Hopefully this one happens as it will most likely be the last thing of summer before I deploy for 9-12 months next year.. assuming its the Labor Day Weekend of course.

It'd be cool if they did 3 nights in Palm Beach over Memorial Day Weekend, 3 nights somewhere in the northeast on the weekend of the 4th of July, and the Gorge for Labor Day.

Does anyone remember if they said they were taking the year off completely, or the year off from touring? Because a couple of dates here and there, maybe 5-10 doesn't really count as a tour if they're stretched out through the year.

I would rather have a full tour or nothing, honestly.

Hell, i'll be fine if they stop at Alpine though.
