stop taking this way too far. There are like 3 people vocally saying they don't like Tim playing in the band.

I like Ross don't get me wrong, but he definitely is easily the most expendable in the lineup. He doesn't really add all that much - yeah harmony in the horn lines but do they really need harmony? His solos are nice, but necessary? Not when you have Jeff raring to go whenever he is given the look...
Tim needs to stay - band needs his energy.
I think Butch should come back along with Tim. He wouldn't have all the solo time he had before (esp with Tim and Jeff) which is really the main thing everybody hated, and he can help the overall sound to be fuller.

i'm curious to see what it would be like if they had original guitar, sax, bass, violin, drums line up a couple of shows. jeff replacing roi, and them playing the songs that they could, which would mean no BW songs.

Tim should stay, and Butch should stay gone. I'm not so sure I see the point of stripping it down at this point; I often see people say that the trumpet and electric should go to make it more like it used to be, like the original five. The original five is never going to happen again, so I don't see why the four left plus Jeff would be any more authentic than the four left plus Ross, Tim and Jeff.

I am not looking for the original sound, but what does Ross really add? If he were gone, would it matter?

Not a surprising opinion, coming from someone with a Dylan avatar.

Of the three, he's probably the most dispensible, and the one that I have the most mixed opinions on, but I enjoy the differences in the sounds he has brought to a degree (i.e. the idea of horn section sounds as opposed to a solo saxophone). My only point was that I don't see the point in dropping Tim and/or Ross in an attempt to emulate the original sound, which won't be back. Better to do new things that have a fidelity to certain instrumentation; as we've seen in both the years when Butch dominated and now when Jeff and Tim have brought a different aspect to the band, fans can tune in and tune out when they're interested or not.

I think it'd be interesting to hear Tim on acoustic with the band, but I have a feeling (completely unsubstantiated) that folks would want to hear a non-effects heavy Tim on acoustic, i.e. like from 96 as opposed to something like 99. I think if we saw him play acoustic with the band, provided it wasn't on something very quiet and spare, it'd be more likely to be something like that. I think he was able to explore just using an acoustic so well because the only things he had to "compete" with were Dave's vocals and guitar.

It's baffling to me that people think that if they just dumped Tim and Rashawn, they'd sound anything like 90s DMB.

Interesting, sure, maybe once or twice, but not as a regular thing.

My thoughts on it are that it'd be cool to see, but I don't feel it's making or breaking Tim's performance with the band. I don't really think about it much when actually listening to shows. I don't know how it would work for me; I mean, a big critique of Tim that I hear is that he needs to ease up on the overdrive. The problem with that critique for me is that, for the most part, the songs he uses overdrive/distortion on are the songs that I think benefit from overdrive/distortion.

Based on some people's comments, yes. Not necessarily from this thread.

I don't think anyone said they would magically sound like the 90's DMB. But I think it would be closer to their original live sound. I personally would enjoy it more, but I wasn't all that excited about Tim joining up in 2008 anyway. Tim played at my first show in '95, and he was the least interesting part of the band to me. The rest of the shows I saw in the 90s were sans Tim and I just happen to like that sound better.
