Yeah, Why I Am's studio cut just isn't very good.

Shake Me's production makes the song better, IMO. It's perfect for that tune. By comparison, I find BBN sounds hollow/flat studio.

Production was definitely hit or miss on BW for sure. I thought Shake Me, Funny, Seven, alligator pie, squirm lithog and Baby Blue were done very well, while why I am, Dive In, spaceman, timebomb and you and me were off putting. Clearly lillywhite is the better "producer for this band, but his production on AFTW couldn't save some of those songs. AFTW sounds so incredibly unfinished from a songwriting standpoint to me. Lyrics are half assed thrown together slogans and cliches, and the music kind of meanders a lot. Not to mention broken things and BBN are back to back on the album and don't sound anything alike production wise. they sound like could both be from different albums.

I found the production on AFTW to be really good sonically (hearing everything, the tones were amazing and everything was crisp and clear) but awful in terms of cohesivness.
There was no real "vibe" that the album captured via production. Good albums have that, where the whole collection songs sound right and compliment each other to almost create a world of its own. AFTW sounds like a failed attempt to make a cohesive (Dark side of the moon) type of album but so poorly executed. The footsteps at the end of the album are so cheesy as is the entire ending jam of drunken soldier where the band clearly copies Floyd.

I love how there was talk of AFTW being like Dark Side of the Moon before it came out. Then it turned out it meant the album ended with a Breathe ripoff. Drunken Soldier is maybe the most frustrating song on the album for me. There's so much potential there but the lyrics are bottom barrel and don't mesh with the epic vibe of the song at all (at least Mercy and If Only's cheesy lyrics fit the songs vibes). And the outro feels out of place, and the different parts feel a bit too forced and pieced together. It's a song with a few really good ideas that, to me, don't fit together. It's so all over the place.

The lyrics are my biggest problem with that song though. This and Gaucho just have such garbage chorus lyrics that don't match the songs at all, they really detract overall.

Agreed this album didn't really create a world of its own. You could say it was even away from the world.

For whatever reason, BW felt like a true DMB album to me, with songs created organically from DMB, whereas AFTW kind of feels like DMB trying too hard to be DMB. I don't know if that makes any sense. But something about songs like SMLAM, WIA, Spaceman, LITHOG and Seven felt very freshly DMB to me. Songs like BBN, Gaucho, The Riff, Drunken Soldier felt like a DMB cover band trying to write a DMB song. I dunno, not sure if that makes sense... I still like those songs but when I say some of AFTW feels "forced" this is what I mean.

Not that BW doesn't have its low points. I think the low points on BW are lower than AFTW's, but the highs are higher. Broken Things and Snow Outside are the only songs that compete with my top 5 or 6 on BW.

I agree completely.

Sadly, for me, if you take Everyday & Stand Up and combine them (and change producers and Big Whiskey & Away from the World, you've got two somewhat solid albums.

I actually love both songs, but yeah, they've been beaten into the ground since they've debuted. 9 plays last year for Corn Bread tells me there's hope for moderation, but Seven needs that same treatment.

Seven was such a unique song when it was first in the rotation. It was ballsy and proud. Like so many things this band does, it just got beat into the ground and never grew.....not that its a songs that requires growing. If it took a two or three year break I'd be happy. Insert Kit Kat Jam in its place and play it into the ground. Thanks!

Funny you say that. I always thought Seven and KitKatJam sounded like they should be played as a combo. Different songs, but they both have a weird sort of vibe.

Yeah, Seven has needed a break for ages now. But as someone who goes to plenty of shows, it feels like I've barely seen Cornbread the last few years. Of my 6 shows last year, I never saw it. I know I saw it at WPB 2015, and maybe once in 2014 (not even sure), and twice in 2013. But that's it.

I'm tired of Cornbread and Seven as well, but Gravedigger follows me like nothing else. If I never hear that song again I won't miss it.

This is where the acoustic set would've helped....especially with Seven. But of course not...

Meh. Would've sounded exactly the same I bet, but with a Tim acoustic solo.

Not playing Seven ever again is the only way to help that song.
