The super-plunge: best of luck

Mortgages terrify me. It's been drilled into my head to become as debt-free as possible. While I know some debt is inevitable, 20 years seems like a fucking long time. Wont catch me stretching it to 30, no way.

Congratulations! That's a lot of stress all at once. I don't envy you that, but the other side is going to be great.

Yeah, but mortgage debt is "good debt"

So. It's Easter and Opening Day, and there's no better time to bring this news to the boards...

By the time we crown a World Series champion in October I'll be a daddy. The wife is 13 weeks pregnant.

I'm out of my mind excited to be a dad.

Congrats dude!! I myself wish I could skip right to the third year of my future child's life. I know the dads will come in here in a huff and tell me I just dont understand, but babies are fucking irritating.

I gotta tell you all about the crazy roller-coaster ride we experienced yesterday, mostly as a public service announcement... It will most likely stand as the most insane 5 hours of my life, seeing two of the best pieces of news I've ever received sandwiched by the scariest thing I've ever experienced.

10:00 AM
Spoiler:
My wife and I had a Dr's appointment with her OB for her 15 week check up of our pregnancy. The baby was being very stubborn, but after trying for nearly 15 minutes with the doppler sono machine we finally got to hear the baby's heartbeat, a healthy 157-160 BPM. It was an incredible experience.

We then scheduled our next appointment for the full image sonogram that would allow us to find out the baby's sex, around week 19/20, or about a month from now.

11:15 AM
Spoiler:

I had arrived back to work and was sitting in our front office, about to start making sales calls, when I got a phone call from my very upset and rattled wife.

On her way back to work, she had been in a car accident on the highway. Without knowing the full details I ran out of the office and headed to the scene.

The highway had been shut down, a 3-vehicle incident. She was in the far right-hand exit lane when traffic began to slow because of a separate single-car accident on the shoulder. After slowing to almost a complete stop, she was rear-ended by a distracted driver who was on his phone setting up a lunch date with his wife. The impact was so intense that it lifted the back-end of her vehicle off the ground and sent her spinning across 3 lanes of traffic, where she was then hit by a slowing semi truck and came to a stop in the far left shoulder. Here are the images [my wife driving the black CR-V]:
Spoiler:

The Suburban that hit her:

Miraculously, she was not injured any more than a small hang-nail sized scratch on her right thumb [and is now experiencing obvious soreness]. Hondas are safe cars, and it was put on display here.

The biggest scare of course, was the status of our pregnancy. We had gone from hearing our baby's heartbeat to fearing that we had lost the pregnancy in a few short minutes.

I sent her to the ER in an ambulance and stayed at the scene to exchange information and clean out her surely-totaled car. Then headed to the hospital to receive the news...

1:30 PM
Spoiler:

At this point she had been checked out and deemed ok, and we then headed down to get a sonogram to check the status of the baby. We had a full 3D sonogram done, on the other guy's insurance's dime [this was fortunate, btw, because in this city, with a majority of the population being Hispanic, most drivers are on the roads uninsured].

I watched as they scanned my wife's belly, and was able to see our baby for the first time. It was very active [a good sign at this point], moving around and posing for the still shots. The baby even raised it's arm to wave at us, as if it was saying "I'm still here, and I'm ok."

After the sonogram was over, before we headed back up to the hospital room, we were given the news that we were having a baby girl. There were tears of course, as we did not expect to find out the gender on this day, much less, that there would be no signs of complications with the pregnancy [my wife was complaining about the tightness of the seatbelt during her wild ride, and now has bruising from it].

The sonogram came back negative on any abnormalities, and my wife escaped with minor injuries and a healthy pregnancy in tact.

We are expecting our little girl, Emma Gale, in October.

I don't wish to share this in order to receive sympathy, because all is well now after a scary moment. I simply wish that you all take this story as an example of why putting your phone down while in your vehicle is absolutely necessary these days. No phone call is worth ruining the lives' of those around you on the road. Please express the importance of this to your spouses, kids, and any loved ones. I am certainly guilty of doing this, like everyone else is I'm sure, and I will never have my phone even remotely near my person while I'm behind the wheel from now on.

Wow, buddy, I am so happy that your wife and baby are both ok!!

And congrats on it being a girl. As you know, I have 3 girls (and a boy), and there is nothing better than Daddy's little girl.

Married guys, just out of curiosity what age were you when you got engaged, and how long had you been dating your future wife at the time?
