For Stand Up, Batson barely had the band in the same room together at the same time from what we've heard--and probably for a good reason. Carter even says in the BW documentary, "we need to get back to basics and focus on music, because without the music, there's nothing else left". I thought that statement was very telling. I think had Roi survived, the band might not still be together today. I think Roi's passing gave the band a different perspective and decided to continue in his honor and to appreciate what they've built and it brought them back together in a way. But that was almost 10 years ago now. New problems or old problems probably came back to haunt. Seemed like Boyd had his last straw and quit, or the band couldn't take him anymore and kicked him out...something happened.
But Roi was a part of the early Big Whiskey(unnamed) sessions prior to the '08 tour. He was excited and rejuvenated with the addition of Tim. There's no doubt in anyone's mind that when the 2008 tour ended they would be going right back into the studio to finish and complete those ideas they were working on.

In terms of the tension, there seemed to be a bit of evidence to that. '05 and '06 took a toll on the band, especially Dave. Randalls '06, after both shows, right when the band walked off after the encore they all got in separate vehicles and bounced. Greg Kessler who was a photographer was back stage both nights and said this happened on multiple occasions that year. They didn't seem upset, just that they barely spoke a few words, which of course only seems natural after so many years, and we know they're all not best friends the moment they leave the stage, but Greg said it was just a different vibe from years prior.

It had been mentioned a few times that people don't realize just how important those Vegas '07 shows were in terms of the band deciding to stick it out after the spring Europe run. The timeline makes sense since Dave gave that letter to the band in late '06 and Roi had that "talk" with Dave in early '07.

People around here love to knock on Dave for a million things, but he should get alot of credit for the way he speaks about Everyday and Stand Up in this part of Road To Big Whiskey.

Sure, he still went on to write You & Me and Time Bomb... but Dave is a better critic of his music than we think.

It's around the 6 minute mark.

Aren't those the Vegas shows Roi didn't want to even play but ultimately did only because he needed the money?

Edit: Not making my statement as dispositive of yours, just as further background.

Bruce Flohr is such a jackass. Everytime he talks I'm reminded what a clown he is.

I know Roi had money issues at some point, and I know he didn't want to play those Vegas shows.

I thought the reason he didn't want to is he had basically quit at that point.

That was nice to go back and watch again. Makes you wonder what's going on with them right now as:

-It's been 10 years since Roi died
-No album since 2012, until this year
-last year there was no tour
-Boyd just quit for this tour

Are they just withering away again (like Dave said he didn't want to do) or will this new album bring life again to their music and shows?.........

That was definitely something I remember being said, but I don't remember any details if there were any shared in public.

Man, rewatching this is kind of wild. We tend to lump the post-Roi era into one giant thing that we shit on, but I'm not sure I've ever been more excited about this band than Spring 2009.

Went to the Texas and Vegas shows that Spring. Awesome vibe on and off stage. We had a new album that was for the most part pretty great. Good times.

Totally. IMO, 2012 was the beginning of the end we call the present. I say 2012, because I really enjoyed those Caravan shows in 2011.

I think the takeaway is that this band has ups and downs.

I was in Nashville - very fun night and a solid show.

That was fun. I had tickets for June 18, 2004 and burned the new songs for the drive to the show.

A fun little tour. Enjoyed those shows more than the summer shows I saw (Alpine/Gorge).

Yep, ALpine 09 was a bummer. N2 was fgood, but n1 was a dud. A huge letdown after how amazing 2008 was.

Ironically, 2012 was a great tour for me. Between Deer Creek and Alpine I was fortunate to get some great shows. Alpine 2012 was the last time I really enjoyed seeing the band.

You my friend, are ridiculous. I've been around since '96, you? We're well aware of the yearly circumstances.
