That Trey acoustic tour was pretty fun. Looks like the Harvard show isn't going up on LP.com for some reason. Looking forward to Watkins and hopefully a fall tour this year.

Was hoping we'd get off the "ball" theme but I suppose it doesn't matter either way.

Nice, I definitley think that's their most "accessible" studio album by far. I always tell people to listen to that one first as far as studio albums go. Try Rift next and see how you like that one. That one is probably my favorite but a lot more avant garde.

Where's Dobyblue?
Phish announced Billy Breathes on vinyl today with the very surprising news that it was cut from a DAT master. It's always been believed that BB was the last analog Phish record (but now we know it was Hoist unfortunately).

Reading back I guess we should have known:
"Overall, the band recorded a dozen two-inch reels in the May session, which, added to the total made up over fifty reels. Many of those were fifteen-inch reels, which the band sometimes chooses because they hold nearly twice as much tape as standard ten-inch diameter reels and therefore need to be changed less often, allowing for less interruption.

Starting May 18th, much of the twenty-four track two-inch analog reels were transferred to digital. On the 21st, some vocal overdubs were recorded "

Well it means that the overdubs, which could easily be redone, were all done to 16-bit DAT and the final stereo mix also only exists as 16-bit DAT given that they transferred all the multitracks to DAT.

Should they ever wish to remix Billy Breathes, OR create a brand new 5.1 mix, they could go back to all those analogue reels and a) create new 24/96 mono files of the tracks to create a 5.1 mix from or b) create a new analogue stereo mix to cut vinyl from.

At least they're working from the flat stereo mix, so although the existing mastering isn't bad (dynamically it's around the same as UTTAD) I would expect with Bellman mastering from the flat DAT that the upcoming release will be the standard for the album for the foreseeable future.

Thanks doby, that's more or less what I thought.

With a 50 dollar price tag and a blank side 4, a DAT > Vinyl release is ridiculous given that this is a multi million dollar operation with the resources to do it right. It's also the last Phish album recorded to tape, so a huge missed opportunity.

The DAT master being historically the original mix, you could definitely argue some people wouldn't want a "remix," but I'm not sure the intention here is to preserve the original mix. Just easier that way.

Awesome love me some ‘93. They’re also doing videos in the app itself too which is beyond awesome. Hope some of the summer tour goes up that way.
