it was fun, but i preferred mario kart.

i used to piss my friends off on Wario's dirt track level with the double shortcut at the beginning that finishes 3 laps in like 40 seconds.

I just remember Diddy Kong being like a cross between Mario 64 and Mario Kart. Also you could user airplanes and hovercrafts which were cool. I always thought it was a much better game then Mario Kart except for it's multiplayer.

it had a lot more single player stuff to do than mario kart for sure, but 4 way mario kart 64 multiplayer is tough to beat. lots of classes skipped for that

Yah Diddy Kong you had to race different difficulties and some you had to go out of your way to collect balloons during the races.

And all the Star Wars talk I missed earlier. My favorite Star Wars game of all time has to be Tie Fighter. Not only one of the best flight sims out there but a great story and a lot more fun to play than X-Wing.

I played the hell out of Rogue Squadron back in the day. The amount of detail in the game (including fully-voiced descriptions of every vehicle and character) was astounding.

The N64 was awesome, but had two huge things working against it: 1.) Continuing to use cartridge-based games when the industry had moved on to CD, and 2.) The controller worked extremely well for certain types of games (perfectly designed for 3D games like Zelda) but terribly for others (fighting games, sports games) which crippled the game library.

Both were awesome in their own right -- yet the combined attempt at an online game (X-Wing v. TIE Fighter) ended up being a mess. The games inevitably turned into missile-fests where you spent the entire game dodging locks instead of shooting at one another.

I'm kinda surprised LucasArts never took another stab at the idea of a SW combat flight-sim, though. The idea should be a no-brainer -- especially with everyone playing online and chattering on headsets.

It was a nightmare for Madden (don't think they ever got to offering an NCAA football game) -- if I remember correctly, EA dumped out of the series on the N64.

X-Wing was a lot tougher, and you couldn't really save. Once you died, you died. Tie Fighter had better chances of you getting picked up if you lost your ship and move on.

Madden went from 98-02 so I don't think they dumped it.
