And on the topic of Phish and DMB's respective peaks...

In October 1996, Phish released Billy Breathes, widely regarded as their finest studio album, produced by... Steve Lillywhite.

In April 1998, DMB released BTCS... we all know about that.

Each album released was followed by a ~3-5 year run of touring during which the bands both peaked in a live setting.

Coincidence? Maybe so or maybe not.

I've seen a lot of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 talk in regards to Phish, the same way we do for DMB.
But from what I can tell, Phish's lineup doesn't change.
DMB's phases are clearly defined - and unquestionably different - based on the band lineup changing. I don't get the differences between these Phish eras. Somebody educate me.

Phish’s phases are broken up by hiatuses. 1.0 is until 2000, 2.0 is 2002-2004, 3.0 is 2009-present

Phish’s are actually more clearly defined and concrete as people still seem to argue about the dmb delineation for some reason. Phish’s are separated by the band taking a prolonged hiatus:
1.0 ‘83-‘00
2.0 ‘02-‘04
3.0 ‘09-present

Okay... so this sounds as stupid and horrible as you'd expect looking at it.
Fun if you were there I bet though.

Yep. I'm a pretty big Phish fan, but yeah--it's just noise. Let's not pretend it's art.

This sounds like how non-Phish fans probably think Phish sounds regularly.

Ah I see.
I asked because to me, this 1997 show doesn't sound any different than the 2 shows I saw in 2013 and 2019. Band seems pretty consistent to me.

That was funny as hell. Totally perfectly phish. Stefan tweeted he remembered LeRoi telling him about this gig.

Maybe is it to an extent. But it's not what I enjoy about them.

it's not like something like that ever happens. the crowd ate it up. Everything in this show except what happened in that jam is what Phish are about.

Except Fish in a collared shirt. That's just weird.

That was fun. It’s funny seeing LeRoi playing double sax when he’s the farthest thing from a showman.

It suited them. This is the same band that jumps on trampolines while playing and covered an entire Disney Haunted House album on Halloween (among so many other weird things they do).
With a band as spontaneous and surprising as Phish, the surprise is more fun than the music sometimes.

To me, Phish's essence is something like 90% incredible musicianship and improvisation, and 10% self-aware gags (think Fishman on the vacuum). The Roi guest spot definitely leaned toward gag territory, but it's the balance of the two that make Phish what they are.
