And it's really disappointing to hear him bash SC's music. It's the most interesting stuff he's ever done, he should recognize that

I think it's more bitterness than anything.

One-time Soul Coughing singer Mike Doughty has maintained for years now that his tenure in the group was pretty much hell, and that the work he produced on records like Ruby Vroom and El Oso is absolutely not, in any way, what he wants to be known for. Still, fans cling to tracks like “Circles” and “Super Bon Bon,” so Doughty has launched a PledgeMusic campaign to raise money to re-record the songs in the manner he originally envisioned—before, as he says in a press release, “they entered the dysfunctional fray of the band.”

Doughty’s written a whole explanation of how he came back to the songs on the PledgeMusic site, but basically it boils down to a period of self-reflection surrounding the writing of his recent memoir, The Book Of Drugs, and trying to figure out who he was back in the '90s. He says he imagines the new versions of these songs with more touches of hip-hop, house, and avant-garde jazz, and that ultimately, he wants to make them more “hearable” (whatever that means).

Donors to the campaign can pre-purchase copies of Reimagined: “Super Bon Bon,” “Circles,” and 11 More Soul Coughing Songs, as well as things like exclusive T-shirts, private Skype listening sessions, and even the laptop Doughty used to write his latest solo effort. The record should be out later this fall.

I don't know how I feel about this. Considering it is legit. Circles was their poppiest song but it's still a great fucking tune. I just think with each passing year he gets even more bitter about those Soul Coughing tunes and how he feels they're not even really his songs anymore because he doesn't own them. I have this inkling that if this is true then it has more to do with him finding some kind of loop-hole of closure by re-recording some of his older tunes and to justify it to everyone he's just saying they didn't come out the way he wanted or intended. But deep down I just don't buy it. He just wants those songs to be completely in his name, which is completely fucking understandable and good for him. I just wish he'd be honest about it.

Now that's not to say I'm not interested to hear what he'll do with them. But i'm skeptical none-the-less.

i think you're right. because his description of what he wants to do differently to them doesn't actually sound different at all. more hip hop and avant garde jazz? that's just Soul Coughing already.

This is great!! Thanks for posting this, Spence. I know I'm in the minority here in that I like his solo stuff, though nowhere near as much as I like SC. I was first exposed to them in 96 when they opened my first Dave show and I instantly fell in love with them. I got to see them headline in 98 and to this day that's still the best show I've ever attended.

it might be mine too.

the 80's Michael Mann/John Carpenter movie-esque synth is perfect.

Doughty's best lyrics too.

Just the thought of him now. The Soul Coughing days were pretty great, but the guy's just very obviously a hack now, and a shell of his former self.

Thanks for posting this. You caused me to rediscover this band. Vocalist aside, the grooves are just so fucking solid. Sometimes I wish Doughty would shut it. He's out of his mind to re-record these tunes.
