New Dave Interview: Album early next year?

Great interview from the Post Gazette.

On another note, Dave fans are going to want to know what the status is of a new Dave Matthews Band record might be. Is there anything to report?

Yeah, actually, before I went on this trip, before all hell broke loose, me and Carter [Beauford, the DMB drummer] were recording some music together. We have a lot of stuff, so my plan is that we’ll put together some music this fall so we can have something out hopefully the beginning of next year. Hopefully, get it finished before that. I think we have some great music and some stuff that Carter and I worked on that’s added to the pile. There’s a lot to choose from. I just hope I choose wisely.

That's good news. Hopefully.

Maybe Dave shouldn't be solely responsible for making the final choices.

The fact that Dave is writing more music for this prospective album does not make me hopeful that his timeframe makes sense, but potentially bodes well for some of the lesser songs to definitively be cut loose.

So we'll have a new DMB album sometime in the next five years. Kewl.

Heh, I love everyone's trepidation with this. I actually trust Dave on this. A new album in early 2018 makes sense. In any case, the fact that Dave and Carter got together recently and wrote/recorded a bunch of stuff is great. And DMB recording this fall is great too. Using this year off, to some extent, to record as a band is what I was hoping for.

I don't see any reason not to believe him. It makes sense to have a new album with the "DMB is BACK" year that 2018 will be promoted as.

Plus, it's been 5 years since AFTW.

I feel like the fact that the song didn't get played much in 2015, and then not at all in 2016 leads me to believe it'll either get cut or reworked. B&BB, Samurai Cop, and Bismarck seem most likely in the running, and maybe Bob Law, Death on the High Seas and Virginia in the Rain.

If we go off of their history, which is the best indicator of future behavior, I wouldn't expect to see anything they've played live on the next record.

We certainly shouldn't expect it. But I think we'll get a couple that we know.

I'll be content if Black and Blue Bird, Bismarck, Samurai Cop and Virginia in the Rain make the album, plus a few new songs.

Just keep the Lovely Ladies far away from the album. No Be Yourself, Plastic Girl or Death on the High Seas. No Sister. Maybe a "neutered" Sugar Will.

Of course, the usual suspects would also be great. They have enough to put out a competent album already. JTR, Crazy Easy, IOY, Shotgun, Loving Wings, Granny, OSW, Kill the King, ADSR, Break for It, Sweet Up and Down... redo Hello Again for fuck's sake!

Hopefully those two together writing is a good thing and not a bad thing. Though I'm still not sure if Carters favorite songs are two step and warehouse or Can't Stop and Be Yourself

I keep seeing people throw Granny out there and I think that is off the table for good now since it was released via UTTAD reissue. Plus, that is a kick ass version!

I'll take 13 new songs by March of next year along with a full summer tour, please and thank you.

I'd love to be surprised by 13 brand new songs. Samurai Cop, Bismarck, BBB, and Virginia can be bonus tracks

Absolutely. If there's one thing I loved about Big Whiskey it was all the "b-side" material that came from those sessions. After that, getting nothing from Away From The World was a letdown.

Yes. I hope we get writing like the "Dave wrote DIDO for Carter" scenario and not the "Cool Dave, I'll just add in some double bass here and there...."

On a more series note, I have to agree he sounded pretty confident in that timetable for the new album. Would make sense with a new tour.....but I haven't listened to those new songs since last year, so if no album, no sweat off my sack.
