Album preview on 5/25/12:

Corey Manicone {[Only registered users can see links.] profile} listened to the new album with Steve in Steve's car in the lots at Hartford on 5/25/12 {[Only registered users can see links.] } and Lillywhite said he could talk about it {[Only registered users can see links.] } but took everyone's phones so they couldn't record anything {[Only registered users can see links.] }. Corey offers the following insights:
  • There are 11 tracks and it's all new {[Only registered users can see links.] }; no previously played songs other than Mercy, Gaucho, and Sweet {[Only registered users can see links.] } [No black jack {[Only registered users can see links.] }, for example].

    • Track 8 or 9 is If Only {[Only registered users can see links.] }
    • Track 11 is the 9+ minute song Lillywhite alluded to earlier {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • RE the tease before Why I Am {[Only registered users can see links.] } on 5/25, he says that is not on the album {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • He thinks two other songs (as in not Gaucho, Mercy, or Sweet) are worthy of being the first single {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • "Don't quote me on this but one song sounded very familiar to the commercial in between DDTW & Stay...I even looked at Lillywhite right away and he just smiled and continued jamming..." {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • Describes that album as "unreal" "> big whiskey" and "big 4" {[Only registered users can see links.] } and "very uplifiting but dark at the same time" and has a lot of outro jams {[Only registered users can see links.] } and that the album "flows beautifully, like BTCS" {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • Incidentally, he alludes to "new stuff on the way - beyond the album" {[Only registered users can see links.] } but did not want to ruin the surprise with more details {[Only registered users can see links.] }. He says he doesn't want to go into it too much but "by the sounds of it this won't be the last album Lillywhite and DMB work on together.."{[Only registered users can see links.] }.
DMBrasil rep also heard the album with Lillywhite in Hartford and shares his overall thoughts about the first listen [Only registered users can see links.] ] (better Translation available [Only registered users can see links.] ).

  • No songs from the Lillywhite Sessions will be on the new album {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • According to Lillywhite only the songs on the album were finished, as in there won't be B-Sides {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • Lillywhite's 'fondest' moment of the recording process happened to be filmed {[Only registered users can see links.] } and Stefan says they shot a 'whole lot of footage' during recording {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • "Rocks and Bones" was one title idea considered {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
Song & music specific:
  • "Mercy" {[Only registered users can see links.] } will be on the new album, debuted Dave solo (with guitarist from the Roots accompanying) 4/24 on Jimmy Fallon.
  • Lillywhite says "Mercy" it is "not quiet" {[Only registered users can see links.] } on the album & "not just acoustic" {[Only registered users can see links.] } and Stefan says it is "a full band monster" on the album. {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • Stefan says he did not know which song "Mercy" was before listening to the debut because he only knew working titles and had not heard final lyrics. {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • "Mercy", "Gaucho", and "If Only" are not the last song on the album {[Only registered users can see links.] } {[Only registered users can see links.] } {[Only registered users can see links.] } that Lillywhite/Stefan previously described as "uplifting".
  • Stefan loves the last track and it is an "uplifting" song {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • Shortest song on the album is "2 and change" for length {[Only registered users can see links.] } and it is not an intro to another song {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • At least one song on the album is longer than 8 minutes. {[Only registered users can see links.] } (the last song, per Corey above)
  • There are no horns that are old Roi takes, it's all Jeff. {[Only registered users can see links.] }{[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • Jeff plays the flute on the album {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • Rashawn says there is no "horn stacking" on the album. {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • No guest vocals on the album, just the band. {[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • Roger Smith of Tower of Power was in studio for some keyboard work on the Hammond. {[Only registered users can see links.] }{[Only registered users can see links.] }
  • If Only is a song that has the Hammond on it {[Only registered users can see links.] }.
  • Dave did not use the "high b" guitar on the album. {[Only registered users can see links.] }
Interviews & Press:
  • Highlights of a Stefan interview on 6/5/12 {[Only registered users can see links.] }
    • "Pleasantly surprised when I got the call saying 'hey you know, January and February plan to be in the studio.' Real excited."
    • "We all showed up in January and Dave came to us with pretty much a body of work that just needed to be cleaned up [...] Not much lyrics but mostly guitar and melodies that he had."
    • "When the suggestion came to use Steve I was just like 'well now's the time.' It felt like the right time."
    • "Lillywhite-- he loves to get full band performances because that way he's not losing anything when he chops us up."
    • "I didn't do any overdubs for this record because everything was done live-time playing with Carter, Dave, the guitars, drums, and bass are all pretty much from tracks that we were playing together."
    • "You're kind of seeing the baby pictures when you hear the record if we've been [...] playing a song on the road that we are going to have released on a record, you're seeing a more mature version of it when you see it live. But then you [...] can see where it came from."
    • "I have a few favorite songs [from the new album]. We're playing one of them now: Gaucho. But I love them all actually, I feel like it's a more mature record. There's a focus on this record that I feel comes from Dave that is really cool. The lyrics are kind of in a questioning sort of state. I'm really proud of it."
    • "This album will be released on vinyl too."
    • "The band loves putting new songs into a set list. It makes it fresh. Almost every song off this record we're jonesing to play."
    • "We have a rehearsal room and I was actually just talking to Dave the other day and saying we should just start rehearsing the whole record in here."
    • "This is the first record with no Roi. We didn't try to salvage anything from the past like we did with Big Whiskey."
    • "Jeff Coffin had really tapped into what Roi had done on the previous records with Lillywhite. It was almost as if Jeff had gone back and studied Roi again. There's thing that Jeff plays on this record that it could have been LeRoi. I thought he was very very tasteful."
  • Highlights of a Rolling Stone article (week of 6/8/12) about DMB {[Only registered users can see links.] }
    • Boyd: "In a way it feels like the beginning again. I don't think I've ever had as much fun in a studio session as this. It was a creative process where everybody was going for it and opening up. It sounded like a DMB album from the past -- Under the Table and Dreaming or even Crash. This was a continuation of that."
Things that are rumored:
  • The Today Show concert series on August 17th.
As of 2/15/12, DMBand.com:
New Studio Album Coming Soon
Dave Matthews Band is currently in the studio recording a new album with Steve Lillywhite, producer of the band's first three studio albums, Under The Table And Dreaming, Crash and Before These Crowded Streets.

Previous rumor info before official announcement that Lillywhite was involved:

Spoiler:

Here's a thread for discussion of upcoming DMB album rumors.

Rumors stemming from D&T show 11/18/11 in NYC where both Steve and Capshaw were attending.

In the main lobby right around 7:30, just bought a beer and was drinking it quickly outside the seating area entrance since they don't allow drinks. While loitering there with my friend, Steve walks right by us. It took me a couple full seconds to double check and realize who I just saw, and then I look over and realize he's talking to Coran (who's impossible to mistake). My friend didn't recognize them, but I'm like, "Dude, that's Steve Lillwhite and Coran Capshaw!"

They banter for several seconds and Steve says that he just saw Dave backstage, but then I interrupt by slightly tapping Steve on the arm and extending a handshake.

I say something to: "Steve, what's up, I hope you work with the band again one day". His response was a joking (don't quote me exactly here) "NO WAY! I Hate them!". He repeated this a few times. We kind of chuckled at his response because it was so over-the-top. Coran was laughing too with that ugly-ass smile. I made an "Ahh man..." response of disappointment, but then he says, jokingly again, "They're not good anymore anyways" (edit, my friend tells me, who remembers verbatim: "They used to be good, now they suck" is what he said). My last words before I walked away was, "They need you", and got a last smile from the two.

I thought I handled it kind of boss, but looking back now I wish I said/asked more. If I ran into him after that horrible setlist I would have been begging on my hands and knees.
