It's a little odd when people start explaining the intentions of Dave's weird gestures and timmy's odd noise. Monday morning quarterback stuff.

But also possibly the most important thing to happen to DMB. The piece that really took them to the big stage and kept the audiences growing.

More like Saturday-during-the-show-while-it-was-happening stuff.

While I agree with you for the most part (e.g., the videos where "Dave is obviously pissed off at Boyd for sounding bad," etc.), Tim never does weird noises like that during Everyday, and they were mimicking Boyd's skrees. Maybe he wasn't "covering up" per se, but it was clearly in reaction to Boyd's awfulness. Same with Dave—he made a surprised/sour face and put his hands up in reaction to Boyd's first note and continued doing so for the rest of the solo every measure. Again, who knows if he was literally making fun of Boyd or just having fun, but it was clearly in reaction to Boyd's awfulness.

21 years into DMB's existence, I don't think they're going to be real concerned about him, unless he is 06/21/98 bad all the time.
It's weird to me that Dave can be picky about certain things (making late changes to the album version of Gaucho, for instance), but doesn't seem to say or do anything about Boyd's playing.

I think it's a case of him being "Grandfathered in". He's an original member (well, not exactly if you want to be picky, but you guys know what I'm saying) and it would be too messy, publicly and privately to fire him.

I actually think its a sign as to where this band currently is.....in 2003-2007 Dave would have shown mild anger or discontent. 2013 DMB can roll with the punches and humor themselves. They're having fun and i'd rather them acknowledge a mistake than watch Dave avoid turning right for the next couple tunes.

Sure, but I think you're missing the bigger point which is: Does the rest of the band care that Boyd fucks up so much? Are they in on muting him? Most importantly if we can hear how bad he is they should too, and if they don't they're either ignoring it or they're just coddling him. Either way, it's not a good thing no matter how tight they are or how much fun they appear to be having. It's just unprofessional.

I think at this point they've learned to deal with it in various ways. I'm sure during some points it doesn't get filtered and it's blatant and you can see it effecting the band by certain reactions but they're very much used to how he is, and pretty much how he's been over the last decade.

Some people are led behind the shed for one year of shittiness, but a decade? Come on.

I disagree. It's pretty amazing that he's stayed so popular, even among some hardcore fans, despite being atrocious for 10+ years.
