My friend got me into Grateful Dead a little over a year ago now. It took a few listens, but once I'm hooked on something, I go hard. I've listened to tons of shows repeatably and basically infused myself into this band - learning what the lyrics mean, the band members styles, what the music meant to a generation that was before me.

My friend recommended me read this book, [Only registered users can see links.] , which I just finished and I saw so many similarities that I had to share my thoughts in case it would help show a little more light on this awesome band.

I have tried to keep this as concise as possible with just bullet points so it gets straight to the point and you won't get bored.

Here it is:
  • Strategic Improvisation
- The authors definition is “blending planning and doing while staying alert, alive to fluid situations”

GD - using this method in business, marketing, and customer service

Tesla – using the Agile method, updating the production lines on the fly, shifting direction when necessary (ex. Going from Nivida AI chips to creating their own)

  • Innovation
GD – Put their money back into the business in the form of lights, sounds, instruments

Ex. The “Wall of Sound” – Created to address sound problems

Tesla – Same thing – putting their money back in the business in the form of R&D and expansion

Ex. From the car itself – to chemistry in the batteries – to the drivetrain – to the manufacturing lines – to the factory building – to the process of buying a car

  • Customer Demand
GD – ’91 recession concert business was off by 25%, Dead became top-grossing act – representing 99.4% of all available seats

Tesla – sold more than any of automaker during the COVID-19 situation

  • Values
GD – “And think about moving the whole human race ahead a step or a few steps” – Garcia

Tesla – Mission is “ to accelerate the world’s transition to renewable energy”

  • Share Content
GD – Let fans tape their show and spread the music

Tesla – “All Our Patent Are Belong To You” – Tesla released its patents for others to use – “They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.”
All Our Patent Are Belong To You

  • Collaboration
GD – created a connection early on with their fans that created a long-lasting customer base

Tesla – ditto

  • Insourcing
GD – Brought in a concert venue, recording company, and ticketing operations.

Tesla – Vertical integrated factories, about to include manufacturing their own batteries

  • Encourage Employees to lead
GD – Employees could give their opinion on the direction of the band and what processes worked best

Tesla – Elon has said on multiple times, and on the last conference call (Q2 ’20) that if an employee has a better way of doing it on the production line please speak up and that would help with the engineering aspect as well

Ex. Two interns helped fixed the Model 3 ramp-up during its initial phase

  • Experience Economy
GD – Being present in the moment on stage to give a truly genuine music experience / Focused on the art of music and not the money

Tesla – Driving the car itself is an experience to the product, something that is new to our way of life / Creating software that allows you to enjoy watchable content and play video games / And of course, Elon has never focused on the money aspect, always striving to make better, cheaper, cars and products that helps drive the mission.
I really enjoyed reading this post. I'm really sorry to hear about your father as well. The comparisons are very interesting and enlightening. Maybe Mr. Musk has read this same book as well .

You do realize that Tesla’s net income is negative right? And Elon’s net worth is almost entirely comprised of shareholders banking on Him succeeding.

Their stock is the most overvalued stock on the market right now trading at like 32,000 times earnings. Yes he helped start PayPal and made money selling it but there’s a lot that could still go wrong here. He’s also on twitter saying that people shouldn’t given a second stimulus while all he’s done for the past 6 years is essentially borrow peoples money with no great signs that he’s gonna pay them back.

There's a bunch a misdirected negative emotions in this post that shows you only keep up with the top fluff media stuff.

Elon has for years supported a UBI, which is better than these stimulus packages. I'm not going to get into that here though, this thread is the topic of sustainable energy.

Also, the stock is actually well below its value as the company is selling more than any other manufacturer right now. Tesla is an energy company disrupting 3 different segments at one time - auto, energy, utility (production).

GM just posted an $800m loss for Q2. Tesla? Profitable.

Meanwhile, Exxon has already borrowed 18B just this year to keep up with their dividends. Not sure that is sustainable.....

UBI sounds like socialism to me not a temporary solution but yeah let’s not digress on it. In terms of just strict P/E ratio (price to earnings) it’s overvalued. They are at .04 per share earnings and are priced at well over $1000 a share. Why makes you such a poster boy for them?

If anyone doesn't want to believe me or try and see the writing on the wall from my posts, no prob, just take it from Jack. I've posted some of his vids over the years and here is his latest one. I learned a lot from him and it's where I got my Model 3 battery cell.

Jack has a background in electrical/chemistry and has had his own EV conversion car company for years. He's taken apart the S and 3 and unrolled both the Model S (18650) and Model 3(2170) cells to show the difference.

Poor guy though, he was diagnosed with cancer recently....

He has that old guy flare and talks a little slower, but well informed.

How ironic. What's the point, really? The game is over, stop wandering around in it because you don't want to quit playing. Let's just all agree to move ASAP to solar, wind, battery storage.

"What has changed is the cost of wind and solar power, which is becoming more competitive, and the technology, which has also progressed substantially," Chevron spokesperson Veronica Flores-Paniagua said in an email. "This makes opportunities to increase renewable power in support of our operations a feasible option for reliability, scale and cost-effectiveness."

Pretty much. There are some other international ones like Total that is already making the transition, but this is pretty huge deal.
