It's really the first time this band wrote bad songs. They went from writing the LWS to the shit on ED. ED is the very begining of the down fall of dmb. Stand up is the point where they never truly recovered after that.

Right, but they maybe wrote a total of 3 bad songs in the whole 10 years before everyday. Everyday had about 5 "bad" songs and the direction of the album was more pop and away from dmb's roots

Yeah Id tend to agree that at least studio wise ED was essentially the end. They never really made a great album since 1998. There have been decent ones but nothing fantastic. This is where record labels really can screw up a band. The main reason they had to record ED was because of contractual deadlines, and LWS was not finished nor was going to be in time. Dave had no choice but to hire Ballard and knock the album out in time. Hard to argue it didnt work when DMB literally charted some of their most popular hits of all time with Space Between and Everyday with Space Between charting I believe higher than almost all the other singles except maybe ants crash or wwys.

Somehow along the way the band lost the magic they had when it came to writing and working on songs. Whatever method they were using pre-2000 had been either abandoned, forgotten or changed. I think it was Boyd that said once they stopped really soundchecking the music went downhill as some of their best songs were started through jamming at soundchecks. If I was to produce DMB Id have them sound check at every venue this summer, record all the jams and song ideas, and then take those into the studio and work them out.

I think the band just fully lost it after stand up. That was the final nail IMO

In 2005 the sound was still decent but most of the sets we're bad. Then the 2006 tour was hit or miss. Some nights had pretty good sets, and other nights had awful sets. Then 2007 got really bland IMO.

And as a whole, the 3.0 era hasn't been very good.

The lyrics are total cheese but the music sounds like vintage Dave Matthews song writing. Spotlight is a song I'd make the "but the music is ok" argument for that I've see people making for Be Yourself which sounds to me like a James Brown cover band.

Yeah, I can count on my one hand the amount of crummy DMB songs that exist pre-2001. After, I probably have to use both hands and at least one of my feet.

To be fair, Dave recognized that the song sucked and never released it on a studio album. We have to give him credit for that at least. In today's DMB world, that song is a single
