I know you work at breweries, so you're coming at it from a different direction. I would do it for the hobby, not at all for work.
Mario. Listen to me right now.

When you arrive in Portland go from the airport directly to Great Notion. Do not stop for donuts, do not stop to give money to the homeless hipsters and wooks scattered around town, do not stop for Portlandia pictures, do not go to Cascade.

Go directly to Great Notion.

I've been to hundreds of breweries from Hawaii to Costa Rica to Belgium to the Czech Republic, and Great Notion was a top-5 experience for me. Every single thing I tried there was unbelievable and they don't distribute virtually anywhere, so everything has to be consumed pretty much on premises. A friend and I were so floored by their beers that we ended up camping out there for like six hours. Are the servers a little moody, as you'll read in some reviews? Sure. But that's Portland: a city full of upper-middle-class white kids that think life has somehow treated them unfairly. Look past this and just focus on the beer, because it's incredible.

After you do that you can go to Cascade or Deschutes or whatever, but make Great Notion #1. It's unbelievable.

You gotta let me know what you recommend for when I'm in Prague in July.

I only did Strahov Monastery Brewery while I was there, which wasnt anything amazing but great for a lighter brew (had mostly lagers when I was there) after a day trekking around Prague Castle.

Speaking of Prague, my 22 yr old daughter has been there for a week so far and keeps telling us how nice the Czech guys are. And then she tells my wife today that a guy in her office invited her to his place after work and said you know what Im implying. Im not sure if it was a language issue or theyre just that blunt, and I dont know if I should or

Just peeking at their website and maybe can suggest to Mario to pick up himself a little gift to remember his trip:

Waking up to that news absolutely sucked. I love Bourdain a lot. No Reservations was such a great show. Kitchen Confidential was a great book. And the best Archer guest spot ever.

Thought I should share this:

So the other day I’m at my new gym and I see a women doing these cool one armed, against-the-wall handstand push-ups. Knowing I’ve been working on my handstand for a while, I stopped her and asked her if she did that to help her handstand (genuinely was asking for advice because she was killing it).

She was incredibly sweet and chatted with me about the core engagement it brings and how it has also helped her handstand. She went out of her way to shoot the shit with me and help me out without an ounce of attitude or pretense. Just an easy, honest convo and I learned a lot from her advice.

Fast forward to today and I follow a hashtag for my new gym on Instagram. I see her featured all over it, so I click one of her pictures to see her profile.

Apparently this woman, Emily Schromm, was on The Real World, is a widely known CrossFit competitor, and is a fitness expert for Women’s Health.

Funny now thinking back that I asked, “sorry, what’s your name?” after we talked in front of a gym full of people (most of whom must know who she is) and then shook her hand, having no idea at all about any of the above.

Sometimes it pays to be oblivious to the world around you. Had I known who she was I never would have asked for advice, thinking she probably wouldn’t waste her time talking to me. Instead, she was the COMPLETE opposite and couldn’t have been nicer and more approachable.

Just a friendly reminder that there is good in the world, it pays to get out of your own head sometimes, and it’s probably a good idea never to assume anything about anyone.

Stuff That Doesn't Need Its Own Thread

So I’m on a train to Detroit right now to hang with my brother and his girlfriend/pickup a car to bring back home. 2 hours ago, we struck a trespasser and killed him. Been stuck on the tracks in shock since then. Never thought I’d be directly involved in something like this, but here I am, stunned and feeling a little guilty that all I can think about is my timeline for the day. Being patient of course, but of course we never asked the guy to step onto the tracks, but this is new territory for me. Totally fucked.
