The Design Thread

Any other designers out there/fan of design/logos/whatnot? Figured I'd create a new thread instead of highjacking the NBA one. sportslogos.net is an awesome one for, well, sports logos. Seriously any logo of any team almost ever is on there, it's great.

Just for shits, here's some new sports logos/jerseys coming out:

2013 Sox Throwbacks:

New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans new logo:

And the probably new Dolphins logo:

Here's a little teaser of a project I'm working on for class, nowhere near done, but I'm liking how it's turning out, I'll definitely post the finished piece when I'm done.

Alright here are my favorite logos, currently at least, in the major sports leagues including secondary logos.

After looking at the NFL logos, I truly believe the Steelers have the best logo, simple and full of tradition.

Have always really liked the simplicity of the Cubs 'C', but that added in with the cub, IMO makes it really fantastic. Love it.

This one is always changing in hockey, the Blackhawks one is usually right up there for me too, but the color change last year the Predators made, making the logo more simple, and with bold colors that aren't really seen in the pros makes this one my top pick for the moment.

There's really only a few logos in the NBA that standout, and the more I look at it, the more the Pelicans logo is standing out. That could become my favorite here shortly, after initially not liking it so much. This one takes the cake for me though.

Runner ups:
NFL: Bears head secondary logo
MLB: Pirates 'P'
NBA: Grizzlies
NHL: Canucks 'Johnny V' secondary logo

Also I'd probably go with FC Dallas in the MLS.

Illustrator, scanned in a sketch (you can kind of see it in the background) and using the pen tool to go over it.

coupe months ago I finally watched a tutorial on the pen tool. After working in photoshop for years I could never figure out the illustrator pen. It's really a great tool once you get it.

Great work. Looks awesome.

Yea, I sort of self taught myself, it just takes a lot, a lot of practice. I never used anything else besides photoshop for years until finally starting to get into it, now I hardly use Photoshop at all, digging the design work a lot more in Illustrator that I've been doing. Thanks, yea I'm surprising myself at how it's turning out

I love those Sox throwbacks. I was wondering when they'd break those out.

The Pelicans logo is awesome. I love that they went with the Pelicans instead of other boring ass names like "Thunder", "Panthers" etc. Pelicans is a bold choice & I like it.

It's interesting. Most MLB teams make a point of having their team name in their logo (aside from the Dbacks, Indians, Tigers, Yankees, Red Sox & Angels).

Also, most MLB teams are set on having circular logos w/ the classic city/logo/name format.

We see this with the NBA, too. NFL, not so much.

I think the Thunder might be my least favorite logo in any sport. So, so boring. The circular logos were once cool...until everybody started doing it, kind of how blue in the NHL was cool...and now everybody is doing it. In the NBA and MLB it must be because they want to incorporate the ball itself into the logo. If the Padres made the friar logo their primary, they'd be golden, but they're stuck in an identity crisis and thus now have an incredibly boring logo.

I actually love the new Nuggets throwbacks, really cool. I also always snicker at the Broncos logo knowing that Nike was behind it and snuck their logo into it.

Yeah, I have no fucking idea what the Padres have been doing the last 10 years. They've had dozens of uniforms, not to mention those fucking brutal camo ones.

They need to have that orange trim.

I agree with you on the orange, completely. Seems like MLB teams tend to go through identity crisises way more than any other sport. Love the new astros brand, but the shading on that star is going to drive me crazy for a long time:

Hate the new Marlins logos, the colors are fine but the execution was awful.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like the Yankees, Rockies and Royals are really the only teams that have never messed with their logos all that much.

Yeah, that star isn't balanced well. I do like that logo, I gotta go check out their uniforms.

I'm pretty meh on the Marlins logo, gotta think they could have been more creative - should have used the fish as the primary figure.

The Cubs haven't changed their logo since the 70s. And I think the Reds have pretty much been the same since the 80s.
