Since there isn't really a clear answer to that question, we decided that it makes the most sense to just list everyone who's playing on a given song. (This avoids the whole issue of "why is/isn't Jeff considered an official member?" which I've always thought is a pretty stupid thing to care about.)
The following people only show their first name (to save space and eliminate as much clutter as reasonably possible) and are always listed first in the personnel list (to make it easier to see who the true guests are): Dave, Carter, Stefan, LeRoi, Boyd, Peter, Butch, Tim, Rashawn, Jeff, and Buddy.
As Rob said, this makes even more sense now that Boyd is gone too because without this change, we'd be listing more people in the personnel column than we were not listing (i.e., we'd be listing Jeff, Tim, Rashawn, Buddy and not listing Dave, Carter, Stefan). The funny thing is that the last email I have to Matias about this was from Feb 1, which was the day before Boyd quit. This came back up yesterday, though, because someone tweeted us asking whether Boyd was still playing with the band—without listing everyone who's playing, there would have been no way to tell that Boyd hasn't been at the last few shows just from looking at the show pages.
Another (admittedly small) problem this change fixes is that when a "guest" plays something by himself (let's say a Robert Randolph intro that's tracked separately or a Tim solo tease of a random song) it's clear that it's just that one person playing and not DMB + that guest.
(When I get home, I'll post the info I found when I was researching how Jeff, Tim, etc. have been officially labeled over the past several years. It's kind of interesting/confusing.)
EDIT: FYI, this will be applied retroactively to all previous full-band shows. I've done 1991 and pre-Boyd 1992 manually, and the rest of 1992–2017 should be coming before too long.
