It's been an amazing thing to see Mayer grow as a musician over the last 18 years.

It might be a weird thing to say, but for years now, I've thought of John as a better guitar player than Dave. After all these years, John's head space is still in this creative mindset whereas Dave just understands that his band is now a "party" band. Anyway.....

I don't think anyone will argue with you on that. Well, maybe in "DMB Family" they would

John Mayer

It’s funny how Mayer was labeled a “Dave clone” back in 2001, but yet he has now surpassed Dave Matthews’ ability in every way.

Yeah, I don't think that's weird at all. Dave was never a lead guitar player in any form, so Mayer definitely has more skills in that area, and Mayer knows a lot more music theory as well, he's very knowledgeable in that regard. I never viewed Dave as a "great" guitar player in the traditional sense, he was awesome at writing really great riffs and his style and sound was super unique and original. And Dave is really skilled at singing and playing at the same time, over some really tough stuff (take the stone for instance). But in terms of actual musicality, it's not really close.

Yeah, exactly. I'm not a big Mayer guy, but he's a much better guitarist. Like you say, Dave's biggest skill, IMO, is being able to sing while playing those unique riffs he used to create. But I never really even consider him a guitarist

To be fair John was always a pheminal guitar player. I remember hearing him play a small club here in Atlanta (decatur technically) and thought I didn't like his singing but loved his guitar playing. The John Mayer Trio was proof of this as well.

Mayer IMO also got significantly better with his playing too even over the last 5-6 years. Him really getting into the dead stuff and playing with Dead and Co has really helped him grow.

He's been able to shift from being a great blues player to a guitarist who can solo and play over many different styles. His ability to outline the actual chord changes right now is something he hadn't done a lot until the last few years, and man has he gotten good at it.

I would also argue that Mayer's catalog is overall (or at least consistently) stronger than DMB's. Heavier Things is his only album that I'm "meh" overall on, but it still has some great songs on it i.e. Wheel.

I feel like their lyrical abilities have had an exact opposite arc. Dave started out amazing and turned into a cheeseball. Mayer started out cheesy and has become quite interesting.
