Yea, any record player advice? Also, do they have systems that can be used for tv surround sound as well?

Doesn't make sense to spend a bunch on the player. The older tables work way better. Put the money into a quality needle and vinyl....

Just for my knowledge, how is the quality of record players measured. By cartridges, amplifiers, etc? I mean, of you want to get the better quality out of vinyl (compared to a cd), them you need a decent system, right?

I've read great things about the Pro-Ject Debut III or Debut Carbon. Hopefully I can let you know more first hand later this week.

After doing some research tonight as well, it seems like the Rega RP1 w/ Performance Pack Upgrage ($640) is a great entry level product as well.

Looks like I'll have to pick-up a preamp, my receiver unfortunately doesn't support phono. Any suggestions? I'd like the usual... something that will give me good sound without breaking the bank.

I used this pre-amp before I got a vintage receiver that had phono input

Picked up a preamp today. May upgrade my preamp down the road with a newer cartridge, but it works fine for now. Next on the list is a record cleaner and anti-static gun to reduce pops from dust. Then a new mat (props acrylic) and a clamp. Loving the new hobby, though!

Jesus, I picked up a booming ass cabinet from the 70's for free on craigslist. I'll post a pic sometime. No way I would spend a shitload on a player. I'd rather use that $$$ on vinyl.
$300-500 certainly isn't a shitload of money as far as turntables go.

Listening to AFTW for the first time on vinyl. The biggest thing standing out to me is the distinctions in Dave's vocal harmonies. They sound great!

The vinyl Away From The World was cut from the redbook cd master. It's basically the same as doing the original master > cd > vinyl. There's nothing "better" about the vinyl copy of this album

Big Whiskey is a different situation though, right?
