Here's a mini review of one of the new album tracks on some UK website:

The Hold Steady - The Smidge: Album No 5 sees the Hold Steady rediscovering the roll that seemed lost among the rock of their last album. A great Stonesy riff from Tad Kubler, Craig Finn contemplating diminished expectations, and an ersatz psychedelia breakdown. What's not to love?

pretty solid, but not standout by any means. the guitarist didn't add anything particularly interesting, but just added a better 2nd guitar option. the keyboard player was mixed down pretty low w/ the exception of the piano features in songs like Constructive Summer and Stuck Between Stations. He did good w/ those, but other than that you didn't hear much from him. It was a much more guitar driven show. The band sounded great all around though.

listening to the Toad's show now and damn Rock Problems sounds great. the new lineup overall is very solid and has a little more filled out sound.

It really was a great opener. That tape came out really nice too. Great show. The transition/segue from Rock Problems->Magazines is pretty sweet, as is the Navy Sheets->Chips Ahoy!

that was another good one! I have to say though, Hurricane J sounds kind of shitty listening back to it. Mostly those backup vocals in the beginning. Way off. But they've only played it a few times so it's not that big of a deal.
