actually, the more i think about it, it's really just whether they're the type of asshole that for some reason i respect or understand. some dudes just rub me the wrong way and some don't.

I feel like Tweedy's assholeness stems from trying to be a great songwriter and make his band great. That can lead to some nasty things said and done (there's a book about Wilco called Learning How To Die that's pretty revelatory about Tweedy's personality, both good and bad), but it's in service of the music. Now certain types of assholeness I won't take for any reason, be it like being an abuser or something, but I kind of like people who are willing to seem a bit of a dick to make good art.

That being said, I really hope this ends up being a double album. It feels like it's been awhile since there's been a really good one.

what stuck out to me the most is the scene fairly early on in I'm Trying To Break Your Heart where Tweedy is talking to all these people backstage and they're asking him questions about the upcoming album and he's just being incredibly difficult

I love how in that part he gives a few half-assed answers, obviously wanting to be anywhere else, and says "I'm gone" and walks out mid-conversation. It is really uncomfortable, though, to watch them all walk out without saying anything after he leaves; like they all know they got caught being hangers-on.

the type of asshole like tweedy is (and dave to a certain extent) basically just fucks with people because they just don't really like them and they're not going to fake nice. i don't know if respect is the right word, but i can get down with that.

I think Dave could benefit from a bit more of that attitude when it comes to his music. I always get the feeling he's not indulging how off the beaten path he actually wants his music to be.

man i don't know, he does have that attitude just directed towards the worst fucking songs. it's possible he's just being defensive of them because we all think they're shit, but i think he just has some shitty taste in music.

He's definitely super defensive of the shit songs. I think deep down he knows they're not as good as his better stuff but feels that he can validate them by beating them into our brains to the point where we get confused and think that b/c the band likes the song, we should like it. Or I'm just a moron. Either way, he's annoying when he gets like that

Tweedy's attitude shines through perfectly on the Sunken Treasure DVD.

When I saw part of that rant on Youtube, it started my Wilco obsession.

Saw the Autumn Defense last month and we talked to John after the show. I asked about the new album. He said it's almost done, it's "edgier" than the last two records, and Jeff was more focused (not an exact quote).

Pat confirmed the possibility of a double album.
