Pink Floyd (opening act: mjf's hard drive crashes)
[Came here looking for Floyd talk and don't give a shit about mjf's hard drive or cloud backup suggestions?? then skip to post #41]
Absolutely devastated right now. I plugged my four month old WD My Passport Ultra into my mac today, and boom. None of the computers I've tried will recognize it. When I went to disk utility in mac, it won't let me repair it and says that it is damaged or something. No luck on PC either. I've got about 2 TB of bootlegs and such I've collected for over 14 years. I kept a backup harddrive, but I had to wipe it this week for another project and fully planned on re-adding the files once I was done. Biggest mistake I've made in awhile. I just wanted to post this up as a warning. I thought I had my ass pretty well covered here, but clearly not. Can you guys recommend anywhere to take it to possibly retrieve the files? Like I said, 14 years of bootlegs (add to that pictures, literally every piece of work I've ever done for 8 years of schooling.... ugh). Any help would be appreciate. Fingers crossed they can pull the data. Last edited by Mitch; 04-30-2014 at 12:33 PM. |

That sucks man.
But I think someone who knows how may be able to recover it. But I don't know what to tell you ![]() |

Damn. Good luck. Going forward you should invest in Crash Plan or one of those cloud sites.
Does WD have a recovery warranty?

It's always a bummer when you lose a hard drive. But 2TB worth of information? Damn.
At least you weren't one of those fools who never backed anything up. Maybe where you bought it from can help? |

Just sucks, like I told ya this was the one thing keeping me studying and pushing through this insane time. On the bright side, I found an old harddrive with approximately 1/8th-1/4th of it but nothing from 2005 onward |

Besides complaining/moaning, that was why I wanted to make this thread. After 14 years and no problems, I figured what the hell was one week? Ugh. Hopefully someone sees this and either gets off their ass and backs things up or triple checks their stuff

I haven't kept up in hard drives a lot lately, but you say you tried it in the Mac and then a PC. Drives are usually formatted different for Mac and PC. Have you swapped them before or was this the first time? It could just be a formatting issue if it is powering up.

Happened to me years ago and it turned out to be the internal patch cable from the HD to the actual USB port. I went to Frye's, bought a new case, replaced the cable and I was good! If you do that and it still doesn't work, throw it in the freezer for a bit then retry it (if the HD isn't spinning).

FIXED!!!!! Well, so far so good I should say. I downloaded EaseUS. It literally goes through the harddrive and is pulling up every file it can that can be saved. So it'll get around what file I downloaded that pissed it off.
And for the record, I never downloaded porn to this HD to be safe ![]() |

I never did either but truth is HDs spin and are faulty. Cloud or Flashbis the way to go these days.

Thing was spinning fine. Just some file I downloaded apparently corrupted it so that when I plugged it in, computers would acknowledge it but couldn't read it. Oh well. Gonna hopefully be a lesson well learned after I transfer the files from it (gonna take another 14 hours or some shit) |

I've got most of my 1 TB HD backed up on my 2 TB one but I definitely need to update my backup.
