Yea, I know how you feel about him, I used to like him quite a bit, but I think I'm getting over him a bit at this point.

they don't really sound like anyone else. just moody, brooding, ballads and the occasional rock banger. i'm sure you've heard their stuff in tv shows or movies before. jason katims (Friday Night Lights/Parenthood) has used their stuff a lot in his shows

they just make really beautiful music

their early stuff is hard to get into and i personally don't care for it. it's more really mellow folky acoustic stuff as opposed to mellow soaring electric stuff like they do now.

so i'd personally go with this order for checking them out

Alligator
Boxer
High Violet
Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers

then swing back around to their first record if you're really into them by that point.

and their music is 90% like Fake Empire and 10% like the second song i posted Available. just so you're prepared to not really rock out much.

and if you've ever seen the MMA movie Warrior it actually used two of their tunes the best out of anything that i've seen. reduced me to man tears and shit.

The National are the most amazing band that has ever walked the face of the earth. if you guys really haven't checked them out, you should be so totally ashamed of yourselves.

Alligator through High Violet is one of the best runs going in rock music right now, IMO.
