Official Release "Year Samplers"

I've had this idea for a while, and I've finally gotten around to starting to work on it. I've always thought it'd be nice to make my own "sampler" compilation for each year/tour using officially-released songs (the band has done this for 1998, 2001, 2007, 2008, and 2012, but those don't include anything from full show releases). I did 2004 tonight, and here's what I came up with. Anything you'd add/change?

1. The Best of What's Around (7.11.04 - Bristow, VA - Warehouse 8 Vol. 1)
2. Joyride (9.12.04 - San Francisco, CA - Live Trax Vol. 2)
3. #41 (8.7.04 - East Troy, WI - Live Trax Vol. 8)
4. The Stone (8.7.04 - East Troy, WI - Live Trax Vol. 8)
5. Hello Again (7.29.04 - Tampa, FL - Stand Up bonus disc)
6. Warehouse (9.12.04 - San Francisco, CA - Live Trax Vol. 2)
7. Everyday (7.27.04 - Atlanta, GA - Live Trax Vol. 43)
8. Help Myself (8.23.04 - Albuquerque, NM - Warehouse 8 Vol. 2)
9. Sugar Will (9.4.04 - George, WA - Stand Up bonus disc)
10. Rhyme & Reason (7.10.04 - Hershey, PA - Warehouse 8 Vol. 2)
11. Good Good Time (7.10.04 - Hershey, PA - Warehouse 10 Vol. 2)
12. Drive In, Drive Out (7.27.04 - Atlanta, GA - Live Trax Vol. 43)
13. Crazy Easy (7.16.04 - Hartford, CT - Warehouse 8 Vol. 8)
14. So Much to Say > Anyone Seen the Bridge (8.5.04 - Cincinnati, OH - Warehouse 8 Vol. 5)
15. Too Much (8.5.04 - Cincinnati, OH - Warehouse 8 Vol. 5)
TOTAL TIME: 2:00:01

My idea is to go for the best performances and most-representative songs, not necessarily the best songs (otherwise I'd end up with Seek Up, Typical, Dreaming Tree, Two Step, Graves, etc. on all of them). I'll probably include some Stand Up songs whenever I get around to 2005, covers for 2008, etc.

I plan to do the same for most other years that we have a significant amount of released material. I'll post what I come up with in here. Hope someone enjoys!

Absolutely love this idea and great year to start. There’s some gems that get overlooked that have been released over the years. 2/13/96 Two Step comes to mind

The idea is that you already have these songs since they're all official releases and can just throw them in a playlist

Great idea! I'd be really interested to see your picks for '95.

I've actually been making playlists like these for a while... I have one or two of these per performance year organized as imaginary setlists, complete with encore, that I've been steadily updating for almost 10 years now. The goal was to make a career retrospective that I could listen to start to finish without feeling like songs were coming up too often but that still represented what each year really felt like. I didn't omit any songs from the discography, so like 2005 is very Stand Up heavy. I tried to put one version of each song performed in each arrangement the band created, so for instance every time there's a lineup change all the songs will repeat again over the course of the next few years of playlists. (Approximately, if a version in each category is available, a song will have a version from 92, 93, 95-97, 98 with guests, 99, 00-04 with Butch, 05-07 with Rashawn, 08 with Roi and Tim, 08-13 with Jeff and Tim, and 14 acoustic.) Plus there are a lot of songs that varied even within eras, so there are a fuck ton of Two Steps, for instance - the arrangement of that ending jam changes a LOT over the years.

So far, I've got from 1992 to a full-length concert playlist made of acoustic set performances from 2014; everything after 2014 is waiting until we get the likely Summer Tour Warm Up this year featuring 2016 performances. Then I'll go through all the 2014-2016 electric performances and figure out how to divide that out into three more playlists.

Anyway, since this is the 2004 thread, here's my 2004 playlist:

Hello Again (8.7.04 - Trax 8)
Rhyme & Reason (7.10.04 - Warehouse 8 Vol. 2)
Gas Into Fire > What Would You Say (6.17.04 - Warehouse 8 Vol. 8)
Crazy Easy (7.16.04 - Warehouse 8 Vol. 8)
Captain (7.27.04 - Trax 43)
Crash Into Me (7.20.04 - Stand Up Bonus Disc)
Cry Freedom (7.31.04 - The Haiti Relief Project)
Good Good Time (7.10.04 - Warehouse 10 Vol. 2)
Superfreak > (8.7.04 - Trax 8)
Too Much (8.7.04 - Trax 8)
Sugar Will (9.3.04 - Stand Up Bonus Disc)
I Did It (7.27.04 - Trax 43)
Lie In Our Graves (9.12.04 - Trax 2)
I'll Back You Up (8.5.04 - Warehouse 8 Vol. 1)
The Stone (8.7.04 - Trax 8)
Joy Ride (9.12.04 - Trax 2)
All Along the Watchtower (9.12.04 - Trax 2)
--
Typical Situation (9.12.05 - Weekend on the Rocks)*
Warehouse (8.7.04 - Trax 8)

* yes this is from 2005; every once in a while, for balance, I've used songs from other years if the performance style is identical to the year in question and I need it to balance out lengths. 2005 is a really long playlist, since there are so many songs for which the only released version comes from 2005. Typical didn't fit, and it was played in 04 the same way, and this version is awesome, so I put it here.

The only songs you used that I didn't are Best, #41, Everyday, Help Myself, DIDO, and SMTS. Best, #41, and DIDO all appear in my '05 playlist (all from Weekend on the Rocks), and Help Myself and SMTS appear in my '03 playlist (both from CP). I also really like the Everyday from the Trax 40 bonus disc, so that's in an '02 playlist. Those songs were all great in '04, but the versions I picked all had exactly the same arrangements and were played a little better, so I used them in other playlists.

....I've thought about this a lot.

Very cool.

Also, I had no idea Gas Into Fire was released on a WH disc!

on the Stand Up Bonus ... that performance of Typical Situation is very good. I'd definitely add that track to any 2004 mix...

It's been long enough that I don't remember why, but I listened to the WOTR one alongside the 2004 versions we had and that was the one I liked the most. I do really like WOTR's mix - that might've been it.

That's awesome, Thrawn. I'm interested in your other playlists. It would bug the hell out of me to put songs from different years in there but I get why you did it.

I'm a bit intimidated by '95... I think I'm going to do '08 next. I'll get to '95 eventually, though.

As the years have gone by and we've gotten more releases, I'm year-hopping less and less. At first it was necessary or the lengths were all out of whack. That Typical is one of maybe 10 or so tracks that are left in the wrong year now.

It'll take a long time to type them all up but I'll do so at some point and make a thread for it.

I needed two playlists for '08 - one with Roi and one with Jeff. Two of the best in the set, I think. That tour was awesome and well-represented by releases. Still a few more tracks I'd like from the Roi part, but they've done well with that year. I feel like the worst-represented years are 1997, 2000, and 2002 - so much stuff from each year that I would love to have but don't. (Though recent Warehouse releases and Live 25 have helped with 2002 a lot.)

I bolded the tracks I think are necessary for the '04 mix. Good picks.

Add the LT 43 Captain, LT 8 or SU bonus disc Typical Situation, and LT 8 Warehouse. I think that SMTS ASTB Too Much is fantastic but I also have come to really enjoy the LT 43 version (you could even attach the reprise). And I would add LT 8 Hello Again, probably. Haven't listened to the 7/29/04 version many times recently though.

Ok, here we go. I'm sure that not everyone agrees with my choices, but listening to all of these in a row is a pretty amazing experience, like listening to the very best show of every year of touring except that songs are spread out as uniformly as possible so nothing ever shows up too much. I really have enjoyed making these.

Thrawn, why do you have '94 performances in your '95 selections? There's been enough '95 releases at this point that could most certainly represent that year without having to mix and match with other tours.

Because there aren’t enough 94s to make their own so they have to go somewhere. Two of them in 93, the rest in 95.

I think you might have my mission statement with these wrong; I'm not doing exactly what was suggested in the thread title. My goal here was to find the best performance of each different style/arrangement of each tune, and then after I'd done that organize them into playlists that felt like concerts that might have been plausible. As we've gotten more and more songs released, it's been easier and easier to get them grouped accurately by year, but I'm not starting with "what best represents 1995". I'm starting with "what best represents (ie) Dancing Nancies", and once I make all those choices, making them into playlists from there.

For example, What Would You Say appears in 1992, early 1995 (new arrangement), 1998 (Maceo Parker), 2002 (Butch), 2004 (Gas Into Fire intro), late 2007 (Warren Haynes), 2011 (Jeff/Tim), and 2014 (acoustic set, flute solo). None of those repeat themselves, except maybe the 2002 one could be omitted since the 2004 one is largely the same arrangement, but I think that the two versions are mixed and performed differently enough to have different feels. But I started with listening to all the WWYS versions and picking the ones to represent each of those styles, and the same with each other song. After I did that, I made playlists out of what resulted.
