Buddy Strong

Buddy Strong looks to be joining the 2018 as a keyboard player. A member of a former band he was in congratulated him on Facebook.

Supposedly friends with Rashawn

Quote:
No he is a hired musician for the live tour but very well maybe on the next one. He has worked Usher, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys the list goes on. We played in an R&B group with Cara Jackson Johnson as he hit the big time. We got a standing ovation opening up for Brian McKnight. After the show Brian's manager came up to buddy and ask him to join the group and he had to turn him down down because he already signed with Usher i managed to talk him into playing and Xtra Ticket for a Jerry Garcia memorial show that was one of the greatest shows the band has ever played. Mind you he was only 21 at the time, had never heard of the Grateful Dead or Jerry Garcia until 2 days before the show. He played like he was a founding member. But he was on the front page of the new times at 13 years old as a child prodigy. He was musical director for multiple Baptist Churches bleeding every musician and singer before he was ild enough to drive.

Whether you like his style or not, Rashawn is a great musician. I'm sure this guy is as well.

He definitely seems talented and the fact that he joined the dead on little notice a la Jeff coffin is probably what sold DMB. Also they’ll probably be paying him as a guest instead of a band member.

I just hope he’s not cheesy or gimmicky like Rashawn

I mean I'm no top knowledgeable person on music but if you are 21 and never heard of GD that's odd imo

Hey, this is better than them not adding anyone at all. Keys will help fill the sound out, add new solos/jams, fill in piano parts on existing songs that should have them/work well with them (Seven, If Only, WAYG, Warehouse, Digging a Ditch, Two Step, etc), plus can be synthesized to fill in for Boyd's missing parts, which is important.
Plus, after a decade without keys, I'm jazzed to hear Tim with a keyboardist in the band. Lots of potential there.

Oh yeah, and if they're going to play piano songs, a proper pianist can play VITR, Bob Law, DOTHS, and OOMH.

I’m happy to see keys getting added. I’m not sure about this guy, but I don’t see any reason to dismiss him outright. But I do feel like if they’re going to have keys, there’s someone they could have called with experience.

Honestly a bit surprised people are annoyed it's a pianist other than Butch. Honestly, Butch is good and all, but there are countless equal or better piano players out there. Even the Tower of Power guy that guested in 2012 made If Only amazing. Any great piano player who can jam will be a great addition I'm sure.

People want DMB from the early 2000s to come back but that’s gone forever

My thing with anyone new is it takes time to get comfortable and shine.
Are they going to actually rehearse, is this guy going to feel like he can step up and play??
If he's going to need a yr or two like butch and rr did before they really get in the mix so to speak, fuck it.

Keys are a good thing. Anything different is a good thing.

Well this is interesting.

Hopefully this means Dave stays away from the keys.

he didn’t “join the dead on little notice”..... he played a show with Xtra Ticket, a Dead cover band in Arizona.

anyway, I’m willing to see if some new blood breathes some life into things.

I’m not a dead fan but that still sounds impressive, especially the part about playing like a founding member. His resume in general is excellent and seems like a good match for the masters in the band: Tim, Jeff, Carter
