I don't think Boyd is high profile enough for that to match up with Trey's quote

Boyd also crossed my mind when reading that line from Trey in the GQ piece on addiction.

Wait is it rumored that Billy Joel has got a habit, or was that just a random 'could be anyone' type reference?

It was random in a sense....my father grew up in Oyster Bay and lived two doors down from Billy Joel. They were friendly growing up, even hanging out in the late 60s and early 70s when Billy was gaining popularity. My mom, who was an innocent girl from Kansas at the time, said he was a dark drunk and she knew he had demons. They haven’t talked in 40+ years but my dad always chronicled Billy’s life and troubles as we were kids. I actually met his daughter Alexa at Bonnaroo in 05 I believe....she was friendly and said she was going to tell her dad when they spoke that Murph said hi.

With all that said Billy has battled addiction to alcohol and prescription medication his entire adult life.

Weird. I always thought he was an innocent man.

I love Billy. I've met him a couple times randomly over the years here on LI. But yeah he's always struggled with alcohol. Last I heard him speak of it, though, he's only been drinking wine for many years now, saying he considers it a "food group" and not alcohol like liquor

No way is Billy Joel over rated. He is appropriately rated. And he has some demons, as anyone who drives their car into someoneís house does, but every first hand story Iíve heard about him is good stuff (much like dave). He used to keep his boat here back in the 80í/90ís and would play Portland fairly regularly. He also would hangout in the bars by the waterfront and was very nice to everyone. At some point he built this huge house on rt 77 (I think when he got married to that young girl) but never moved in. It sat there empty for years until he sold it.

Maybe one underrated aspect is that when he felt he had said all he needed to musically he didn't force himself to keep shitting out new material.

Just want to nitpick. I think Dave is a good person, but he’s not nice. At least not to your TDC type fam, which is fine cuz we’re not nice to him

Cause he knows the second he's nice to one of the TDC type person he's going to get an earful of "so why the fuck is xyz never goddamn played and you have a rotation where 50% of shows within this 10 year time frame have a rotation of the same 6 songs that are played", "why did you really dock Cigarette Lit from SD because the reasoning you gave is BS", "why of all things did A make the cut but C which you played in heavy rotation and sounds better got docked and shelved" and then of course also "did you ever give Boyd some dirty socks in the hope he would give a shit that night?".

Billy Joel is cool though, I've gotten to meet him a few times over the years. Friendly dude, wasn't surprised he drove a car into a living room since he's from Long Island.

Dave Matthews owes Tamby so much and it’s such bullshit he doesn’t repay him. Fuck that. Team Tamby forever!

Those are all valid questions he should answer, and if he was cool he would.

He does or at least seems to answer this pretty head-on. His answer is just a simple and straight forward one. He likes what he selects from his body of work. The next filter is who he is playing with. The band wants to play stuff crowds respond to and likely stay away from things they don't like to play or that have a negative association for whatever reason. Solo he's got his go-to songs he's comfortable with and when he's with Tim they play anything they're feeling because they've got the best working dynamic of the group.
