In-Depth Song Discussion #2—Seek Up

This song to me is also quintessential jammy DMB in its purest sense. One of Dave’s strongest songs lyrically and One of my favorites for sure and it’s a song that really features every sIngle member of the band as a soloist (except Carter, who basically solos the whole song anyway)—from Rois intros to Boyd’s solo to Dave’s epic wailing to the occasional Butch/Carter jams at the end of the song, it’s a song I could hear every night live and it’s one that has continued to evolve and age well.

I think this is one of 3.0s better songs for sure. Nothing will beat just a solo Roi solo intro to me, and I wish Jeff would be allowed to do one on his own, because the battle between him and Rashawn gets on my nerves and is to chaotic for my taste. However, in 2016 Jeff and RR seemed to really hit their stride with the intros and they built a lot better imo. I love what Tim adds and bring to this song as well, and while I still think the Outro could be trimmed down a bit, I love it. Not sure how they’ll play this one without Boyd..I guess either Tim or rashawn will take his usual solo section, going to be weird for sure.

So what are the best versions? We know of 7.25.01 of course, but what about best ones with just the original lineup? Best ones in 3.0?

The Red Rock ‘95 one is still one of the best to me, even though technically not original lineup because Tim’s on it. But that version is always a great really tight shorter one. And though I’m biased I feel like SPAC ‘16 Seek Up was one of the best ones I’ve seen for 3.0

Been said about multiple times before, but this song would benefit from Rashawn getting out of Jeff's way. I think the intro is way too busy these days.

I like what Tim adds a lot and it's still a beast of a song. Just too noisy with Rashawn on it.

Carter and Tim had some great ending jams in 2016.

My all time favorite show opener. If you went back and found every dream setlist I ever posted on a DMB message board, I'd bet 90% of them have Seek Up opening.

The LT3 version of this might be my most listened to DMB track. I love what Butch adds to the intro on this and the other '00-'01 versions. ]

I always liked the chaos of the current versions, and will throw in 'Roi's last version, 6.25.08, into the group to check out as well.

The Warehouse 5 version, 7/30/01, is so good it's a little absurd. If I'm picking top 10 released tracks ever, it's in there.

Brandon mentioned it, but 10/5/04's version is killer.

I refer you to this thread I made a few years back extolling this version's virtues: [Only registered users can see links.]

I still wonder what the Seek Up with the Flecktones would've been like at Randall's '06. may have been the worst setlist cut I've experienced (with Raven cut for Everyday at Bethel on 09 on its tail)

Yeah this one is pretty much as good as it gets. I'm also a big fan of 3/7/99 and 9/11/03.

I don't like 3.0 at all. I feel like the intro is so over the top, it's like they try to make the song climax at the beginning instead of letting it build and climax with daves wail.

Oh, and by the way, it's TIM, not STEFAN. Obviously.

Still kills me. Wish I never knew this was a possibility.

Amazing song. Top tier live DMB. Probably the best opener too.

One nifty thing about Seek Up is that the riff, on its own, sounds like an A-minor chord (the riff goes A, C, A, D, C which sounds like it's built on the A/C minor third with the D as a transitional note) but actually the chord is a D minor chord and the C is the transitional note. This does not become apparent until the bass comes in.

The interesting thing about this, to me, is that Dave is aware of this ambiguity and when he's playing it Dave & Tim style he changes the chords so that the verse is clearly built on a D minor chord; without the bassline, the original riff doesn't sound right to him anymore. Listen to how Seek Up on Luther College starts.

My absolute, favorite show opener. Nothing beats it, IMO. King of that slot.

My bday show at Red Rocks, someone asked what one thing I'd love to see at my bday show and my answer was "Seek Up opener at Red Rocks" and I'll be damned if it didn't happen. Perfect start to the bday show.

All-time favorite version that I've caught in person - 8/29/98. Flawless performance that went straight into heartbeat jam-->PNP-->Rapunzel that, to-date, is my favorite opening run of a show I've ever attended.

I'm not a fan of how busy the intro is with what I call "chaotic horns" with Rashawn & Jeff. I kind of feel that Jeff could shine in that intro much like Roi if Rashawn wasn't feeling the need to get into the mix...it kind of destroys the musical feel and replaces it with just audio chaos. I still welcome it...but I brace for that intro almost like the Boyd 03 outros that were trainwrecks.

The rare case where I think a standard version of a song is a live version vs. the studio version... The R2T version never did much for me, all judgements on Seek Up use the Red Rock version as a baseline. I used to listen to it constantly, pretty sure I know Roi and Boyd's solos by heart.

For a good post '04 version listen to 12/15/05. Carter and Butch kill the outro, very long version but it doesn't feel long because they keep it interesting.
