A simple google search proves this false.

These are just a couple results but it's clear he only started doing much musically in the last 20 yrs.

Besides the guy is how old? Can't be much older than 45.

That’s a bad excuse. Dont play on every song if you can’t learn them. What was Jeff Coffin’s excuse?

To be fair to Buddy, he plays a harmony instrument, so his part is a lot more involved and a lot more crucial than a horn part. I've been a sax player in bands myself, and its pretty easy to pick up on simple horn lines and commit them. I'd imagine that as a keys player you have to have a more intimate knowledge of the structure of a song, because if you fuck up (ie play a wrong chord in a wrong section) It'll fuck up more people in the band than if a horn player just plays a wrong note or two.

All this being said they're probably at a point where they could be adding more songs into the mix, Buddy should be fine at this point, but I would imagine Dave gets more nervous about fucking up on stage so he's probably erring way too much on the side of caution.

The dead got their start in 1965. Buddy was around negative 20 years old at the time.

He's not a founding member, the quote was he "played like a founding member" at a Jerry Garcia tribute and I believe he sat in with dark star orchestra a few times after because he performed so well that night, having taken the gig on only a few days notice. I think that's how the story went but I could be mistaken.

So he was indeed a founding member of the Grateful Dead, yes.

Exactly. He and Jerry were roomates in lower Haight in the 1960ís. I think Buddy dated Robert Hunterís sister for like a decade. There were also rumors Mountain Gril broke up their relationship and that is why he left the band. But take thst fwiw.

Ah, pretty good one at that because he played it smooth.

I don’t really think it’s all about Buddy. Carter and Dave have been fumbling quite a bit. Half the Bayou performances have been botched. Also it’s not only about variation but about playing good songs. They’re choosing to play Bayou almost every night when they could be playing BOWA, etc.

I loved last night. Great time. I had shit seats N1, so it was amazing being in the pit and getting that full immersive experience.

The clear highlights were Seek Up, Crush, and Dancing Nancies. How awesome to hear Seek Up again. That was a great surprise. I was locked into every second of the performance and absolutely loved what Buddy did during the part where Boyd usually solos. It totally delivered in a big way and felt like a special moment seeing him take on an intricate DMB classic for the first time. Welcome to the big leagues, Bud.

Rashawn took another marvelous, long, jazzy solo on Crush. One of the best ones I've heard him doing with DMB. Jeff was really impressed and into it as well, he was patting his hand over his heart for most of the solo.

Carter was excellent all throughout the show which was great because I thought he was lackluster N1. He was really locked in and precise on the Dancing Nancies, Satellite, Seek Up, Funny the Way It Is run in particular.
