In-Depth Song Discussion #9 - That Girl is You

Like most, Iím not a fan of this song. Iíve listened to it several times trying to figure out what, exactly, Iím missing that a strong minority of lovers are hearing, but Iíve come to the conclusion that Iím not missing anything and itís actually just a crap song.

Great, Dave noodles around on a bunch of instaments and sounds like Fergie singing the national anthem at the NBA All-Star game this year. Why does that make this song good?

The lyrics, while understandably purposeful in regard to the vocal delivery, are really bad. The delivery itself isnít very good and makes me feel as if they rushed the take, particularly given what they were going for (ďhey everyone, check out Daveís vocal range!Ē).

I canít wrap my head around what many (usually!) respectable people here are digging about this song, so much that theyíre contributing to safe space threads to hide away from the rest of us.

To those people: Iím calling you out! Show your work. Why is this song good? Are you up to the challenge of explaining yourself?

you all.

All the instaments played by Dave.

To me its just got a good get stuck in your head element. Its dave at his core, in the goofy, unique way. And it works great when you actually think about it in the context of a lustful relationship with a girl

I love the song. I find it groovy, and I love the raspy vocal. I think it's a fun little song that reminds me of being a little drunk and enjoying my wife's company.

I'm glad we have it, but now that we've had the album for a few weeks, I don't know if it fits on there. Probably would have been better to release it like Eh Hee was.

Alright here goes nothing.

So I, like others, did not like this song hardly at all initially. Most of my sentiments were the same as Josh's in the op so I don't need to repeat them all that much. However I think seeing it live really changed my mind on the song. The song has a great build, almost like a smaller scaled version of some of the more epic songs like Seek Up, Bartender, etc. (Invariably someone is gonna come along and accuse me of saying that TGIY is as good as those and NO I'm not saying that in the slightest) The groove is really solid and when the horns pop during the bridge I was definitely hooked.

Sure the lyrics are really simple but I think the delivery is fine and kind of justify them. I'm never going to change anyone's mind on the vocal style here but I don't mind it. The album version is a lot weaker than the live ones but in the context of the album I don't mind it, and don't really skip it too often.

I can kind of see why people wouldn't like this song but some of the hate for it is just ridiculous imo. If this wasn't released prior to the album coming out people would probably not have reacted so negatively. The lead up to the album was a real nervous time, and people seemed really quick to either proclaim any small victory as something amazing or completely shit on anything that was even slightly bad. I wouldn't even remotely say that this song is one of the worst Dave songs ever, at least it's not another cringe-worthy song about eating ass (Shake Me, Hunger, BBN, etc.) or another super preachy song (Mercy, Gaucho, Come Tomorrow).

Overall I'd say it's harmless, I enjoy the live versions, the album version is meh, I think people overreact to it a little, I don't love it by any stretch, but whatever.

NAN, I agree with some of your overal sentiment. For example, when I first heard it I thought it was possibly the worst song the band’s ever done. When I learned it was all Dave I softened on that a bit because I appreciate his willingness (and balls) to try such a thing.

It’s one of the band’s 20 worst songs now IMO, but not one of the absolute worst or anything, particularly because the live jam IS a tiny bit okay (though I still think overall it’s just weak, repetitive noodling that ultimately leads to a wall of noise).

It’s not my least favorite track on the album, I think that’s Come Tomorrow, but it’s probably just behind that.

I hope we get to hear from the people that don’t just kind of like the song, but LOVE the song. You all know who you are!

I dont mind it that much but its the one song I constantly skip on the album just because I dont think it belongs on there. It should've been an Eh Hee type release as mentioned earlier.

It has a cool vibe. This is a song where the lyrics dont bother me at all because they fit the mood of the song. I dont think they do the song any harm as opposed to a song like Drunken Soldier or Guacho where the music is so big but the lyrics are just there and take the song down.

It would be fun to hear at a show.

Dude you totally hijacked my thread idea and there were already two giant threads on That Is Girl you (positive and negative) but it’s fine because now that it’s out of the way there won’t be a need to ever have another one.

This song isn’t a DMB song at all especially on the record, so it’s not even worth discussing because it’s really a Dave solo song. So compare it to stuff on Some Devil if anything. It’s a bad song with a comically bad vocal delviery that’s trying way too hard to be something unique. Live it’s certainly better but still in the bottom 20 songs I’d want to hear at a show, and as an opener is a real bummer.i

hate how Dave Inc recent years has decided that opening song is always going to be this “let’s start mellow and ease everyone while they piss and get their drinks”—they rarely come out of the gate blasting these days.

Surprised Marcelino hasn't shown up to tell you all how wrong you are. But yea, TGIY is a steaming pile of shit that's been eaten by a curious dog, and then vomited back up.

So I guess it's not worth discussing:

Dodo
So Damn Lucky
Oh
Stay or Leave
Baby Blue
I'll Back You Up
Let You Down

these songs are either Dave Solo as in just Dave and his guitar, or songs Dave didn't write with DMB.

Yeah the studio versions of those songs don’t belong in a DMb conversation. The live versions where the entire band is contributing to them, sure you can discuss that. But as far as studio goes I don’t consider those DMB songs and this is look at them and treat them differently when personally ranking them.

Let You Down is DMB though. Regardless of how Dave wrote it, the entire band is on the studi recording of that and all came up with parts to play on it.

I see what you’re doing but not equivalent.

I would listen to Baby Blue (the worst of your list) 56 times in a row before I raped my ears with studio TGIY one more time.

I mean really, who would honestly have the balls to play this song for a random person and tout it as a great song? I call bullshit on anyone who would. Call it a guilty pleasure, fine, but i sure hope noone listens to this in public without headphones...

What I want to know is, has there ever been a more controversial DMB song?

I think I Did It is up there too. I remember a lot of people really saying, "WTF?" with that one. Though I don't recall a lot of people liking that song a lot. I know people enjoyed the video for it, but the song? Not so much.
