I'm not sure that a 2018 Ants qualifies as a 'moment.' I know what you mean, but I've thought Ants has been pretty unbearable for years....just too much going on, too loud, doesn't flow.

DMB with James Brown doesn't translate on tape. DMB playing Ants faster and louder doesn't matter whether you're there or not, I think it's really personal preference, like was said, about the song being a 'wall of noise' as the closer, because people dig that. I'm not one of them, I don't think Tamby is either.

I didn't mean special moment, per se - although it was fun having the Preservation Jazz Hall Band up there for a song I've seen 50 times.

But that "wall of sound" you hear on the tape isn't a problem when you're there is all I was really trying to say.

I get that, and that's probably true for most.

I think back to CVille 2016 for me....and I didn't enjoy Ants in person there, mostly because of that 'wall of noise' and what I love about the song being totally gone.

Then again, the next song was The Last Stop and I've never heard such a crowd pop in my life in person....and I loved the whole thing even though that and Billies were louder than fuck.

I'm rambling again and I'm not sure what point I'm really trying to make, but I've never thought of Ants as a 'loud' song and don't think it should be so busy, whereas with Last Stop, Billies, etc....the louder and more obnoxious the better.

This Ants with Preservation translates to a ton of fun on tape. Regardless of what it could be and most specifically "was", it's still one of the songs I'll always give a pass to.

This is a good show. Iíve thoroughly enjoyed this tape.

Graves is awesome. Lawlor kicks into a sick rhythm on Rhyme. Jeff is smooth as fuck on Say Bye, first time I have enjoyed a say bye in a looong time. It has that charm and vibe the old versions do.

I can deal the way it is obviously, but itíd be even better if someone who can actually play violin was on these songs.
Billies is awesome with Jeff, if they actually would play it.

I haven’t been able to listen to the tapes yet, but I loved that Ants in person. It was noisy and fun. I’m also a big fan of loud, angry Halloween’s in the encore so I enjoyed every second of it. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited to listen to shows I attended. Can’t wait to hear Mike’s tapes.

I like Ants in 2018 more than I have in forever. Personally I love hearing the full band tradepff where Boyd used to solo. Boyd meandered aimlessly. The band exchanging solos is basically what they do in Recently which I love there, so why wouldn’t I here?

I know I’ve heard it, it is awesome, but it’s not the same. Billies loses its “ classic” vibe and sound to me without the violin. Just my .02. Boyd joined the band in the very beginning simply because they wanted a violin solo on Billies really bad—then he was asked to join the band from that point on. I mean the song was written with violin in mind

We should be more careful not to paint a revisionist history here. We all are glad theyíre having fun on stage this year and sound great, but from my memory, they looked like they were having fun before too. The Boyd issues clearly hit a boiling point eventually, but I donít know if thereís any basis to describe DMB before this year as ďa group of guys who canít wait to get away from each other.Ē

But the Boyd thing always lingered under their skins. Sure they had moments they were feeling it, but Boyd had been sawing the Ants solo for almost 10 years

Obviously not everyone wanted to be apart. I spent time with several band members (Boyd was not one of them) one evening in the summer of 2016 and several had already made a lot of alternative plans for 2017.
