More so the other way around, it seems.

It's pretty awesome. I cleared off the schedule book today and went to a Reds game with a law school buddy. Good times and more freedom than when I was working at a firm.

The money is now much better as well. But the flip side is that it's a HUGE risk. If you get lazy, and business doesn't come in the door, you're up a creek.

Cool. My Grandfather played sax in an Army band that went around Europe playing for the injured at hospitals in World War 2.

Yeah -- that was always my fear about going into practice for myself. I've been trying to pick up some civil work on the side as it is, and I'm finding it rough going. I need more friends and acquaintances to start getting divorced or have custody battles, I think.

Any chance you want to fly out this way and play the part of homewrecker in the lives of some casual acquaintances / friends-of-friends for me?

Very cool.

I play in the US Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps out of Ft. Myer, VA. I have been playing the fife since I was 10 and I do what I love.

I don't mess with family law stuff beyond the financial end of it all. I would HATE dealing with divorce every day.

Yeah it's sort of the same deal if you get into 1099 consulting, which is what I eventually want to do. You make your own hours, mostly dictate your own workload, but if you have a contract that expires and nothing in the pipeline, you gotta hope you saved well enough to cover your own bench time.

But when you think about it, anyone who doesn't want to report to The Man pretty much deals with that. What makes working for a company safe is the consistent work...but with that safety comes all the bullshit of office politics, ass kissing, and sometimes unreasonable expectations.

I think I'd rather bank of myself building a good enough network to bring in consistent work than continue having to work with and for a group of blood-thirsty, drama-creating, untrustworthy douchebags for the rest of my life.

I don't have a ton of interest in it, I'm just told it's a good way for people in my line of work to have a side law practice in addition to my 9-5 duties.

I wonder if baby Spence is born with a tight hoodie and a netbook? Matt would instantly know your jig was up and hunt you down.

Hmm...I know several who do divorce work that end up in property settlement conferences that boil down to nothing more than HOURS of bitching back and forth killing an entire day. Although, you're getting paid hourly for said bitching.

I'd much rather stick to bankruptcy, financial restructuring, foreclosure prevention, business structuring & tax issues with the occasional PI and estate planning thrown in than deal with family law (aside from the entanglements on the financial end anyway...it's kind of fun to help a client out who got a raw deal in their property settlement agreement. And if your'e lucky, they have an ex that's dumb enough to try and violate the automatic stay and end up paying you through Bankruptcy Court on a nice, hourly basis for their violation as a sanction)

Ever been bored at a job because your boss likes to do some of your work? I'm extremely bored right now because for the past several days I've walked past her office and seen her working on things I should be. I mean, it gives me time to read up on things and the like, but at a certain point I want to work......
