I'm sure "mountains of excrement" will be the connection.

He also posted 9/4/04, I’m not sure the full show was circulating before.

There was a great early 00s Rapunzel that we used to praise all the time on here, great Carter/Butch/Roi outro... 8/25/03 maybe? What was the date on that one?

I keep coming to this "what could have been" every few months... but Dave Matthews should have just ended DMB and chased that spark that created Some Devil. I feel like that spark is still audible in "The Fly" and that solo version of "Eh Hee" he recorded. I can't help but thinking it would have been really really fucking good stuff.

Hell, maybe even Stand Up might have been good. Hard to imagine, but... if those seeds had been nurtured and explored in a different setting other than Batson, but also separate from the "this is for DMB" part of his mind.

DMB made better stuff in the last 15 years than The Fly and studio Eh Hee.

I think about this as well at times. What if Dave kept collaborating with Trey and Tim more after the SD sessions. Who knows where his creativity would have gone. He might have created an incredible new direction, or been in rehab with Trey. Roi might still be alive today as well. We will never know. I still really appreciate the great songs that have been created since 2000 though.

I'm glad he didn't honestly. I don't think long term it would have been a good move. Plus, I think we'll get plenty of solo Dave in the years to come as the band slowly transitions into less and less touring. Granted, he writes stuff like TGIY now but maybe if he's in that solo mindset better things could come from it.

The 2004 songs proved DMB had plenty left in the tank, they just chose not to finish those for some reason and go a different route. Whenever or whoever made that change in late 2004 going into 2005 to go with Batson and change their approach, in essence really screwed up the trajectory.

Well, 2004 songs showed that DMB had great music left, but Stand Up also showed that they had either lost the interest in or ability to tell what their best music was. And I would say, personally, that by and large their choices since then bear that out in a big way.

Yeah for sure, something drastically changed and shifted them in the Winter of 2004 into 2005. Either the inner relationships in the band were so strained they couldn't work together, or enough people behind the scenes convinced them to go a different route and try changing their writing process that had worked so well for them for the first 10+ years of their career. I hope someday we get more background bio and info on what went down during that time.

I'm more interested in that than the LWS stuff at this point because I really think this shift was even more drastic and potentially changed the course of DMB for good. I mean, in the last 15 years, the band has produced at best 10-12 really solid songs that compete with the stuff from 91-04, imo. Everything else has been either throw-away or just run of the mill. And the output has suffered as well. We went from getting a new album every 2-3 years....and now there's been 3 total albums in the last 15 years. Part of that is age and kids/family no doubt, but there's definitely more to this story that'll be interesting to read about down the line.

At this point, I doubt it’s coming. We’re halfway to 25 now. They’re probably going to wait for that. Or they’ll just do nothing for it. ED 20 next year, though!
